Local favorites, always delivers the best.
Amazing pastries probably the best in town
The place is always packed, but for good reason. The food and coffee are amazing! This place is sooo good! It has lots of seating outside as well for bigger parties. This is a gem, on one of the main streets in Santa Cruz. I highly suggest everything on the menu.
Large amount of bakery items to choose from and numerous hot breakfast options to choose from as well. There is an outside eating area. The staff was super polite and made sure my first experience there was the best. I ordered the bacon burrito and it came with delicious hot salsa. Definitely recommend checking this place out if you are in the area.
The bakery is pretty nice!
Good BLTA and choc chip cookie. Loved the garden dining. Charged for iced tea refill.
My first stop when I visit Santa Cruz for coffee and pastries. I always buy more than I should, but its that good. Dulce de leches cookies, snowballs, bear claws, thumbprint cookies and more. Tasty, buttery, and melt in your mouth.
Went in to try some of their pastries because we're looking for a cake vendor and the staff was very rude and rushing us to order. Would not recommend.

The brochure cakes they make here are always so delicious. But asking for a custom cake? Good luck. I asked for a specific cake and was told the only thing that couldn’t be done the same was the cherries yet this is what I got vs what was asked for. Soooo disappointed because it’s not an ugly cake but it’s not what I asked for, thankfully it was good and my guests loved it regardless but I was sooo sad it didn’t match my party aesthetic! If you aren’t able to deliver what is being asked for please just be honest, I was charged $90 and the person who I got the inspo picture would’ve charged me $60, it was her work (she’s a small business ) so i know she would’ve delivered it as asked for I just took too long to place the order ( MY BAD FORSURE ) People get cakes for special and meaningful events, it literally sucks when you see what you get and it’s not what you asked for but are stuck with it because WHO could pull another cake out of their a**? In an hour before the event it’s needed for?

Super disappointed in the customer service and overall experience. Definitely take your Custom Cake business elsewhere - maybe Gayles in Capitola?
On Saturday, 8 February I came into the Buttery to order a custom cake for Sunday, 16 February. The person who helped me confirmed with the bakers it was possible to get a custom cake made and took down my order. They asked me to send an email with the specific details and pictures of inspiration to "[email protected]". I immediately sent an email on Saturday. By Tuesday 11 February, I still had not received a response so I followed up to confirm / make my payment. I was called at 11:00am on Tuesday and told my custom cake wasnt possible and that I could get a pre-made cake.
Why did you take my order on Saturday then? Extremely rude and super disappointing. Now I am left to find a custom cake elsewhere.
I live in Seabright and often frequent the Buttery but the whole experience has put me off.

Favourite bakery cafe in California. Love the lemon tarts! Sandwiches are huge as are the salads, share!

New owner is running it into the ground. Used to be one of the best spots in Santa Cruz but now it’s pretty bad. If it tastes like gas station food that’s because the new owner owned gas stations and now bought this and brought the quality with him. Bring back the old Buttery!

I pre ordered a #5 sandwich and they left out the bacon. You get one star for inconsistent cafe food.

I’ve been going to the buttery since 2007. I just loved this place. The bakery items were always amazing and the catering items were as well. I’ve probably purchased 50 whole quiche here over the years for various gatherings at my house. The last 2 times I’ve purchased quiche they’ve been just terrible. The first bad one I just chalked up to a bad day. This last one was even worse. I was embarrassed to serve it. So I won’t be buying them again. I also am just so disappointed in the re work of the flow in the restaurant. They no longer have soups and the display with all of those lovely salads is gone. It’s a real shame because this was always one of my go to places. The day I stopped to get the quiche I also got a macaroon which was delicious but the cookies that I got (chocolate ginger) felt like they were day old. I know they were sold several years back and that seemed to be when all of the changes began to occur. If you look at all of my reviews on Google I rarely give a negative review and I really debated about doing it here. But the quality has just declined in this old Santa Cruz mainstay. I hope that they will evaluate where they’ve taken the place.
