I had a cake made for my daughter's birthday, but she had to fight me for it as it was so delicious! Very rich, fresh ingredients. I would highly recommend their cakes - it was one of the best I've ever had.

I hired them to do my wedding cake for my elopement wedding. They worked hard to help me design the perfect cake. I was so much looking forward to trying their cake flavor! When my wedding got cancelled due to a landslide, they refunded me my money and were very kind!

This review is specific to the Buttery's wedding cake service. I grew up in the Santa Cruz area munching on Buttery treats, and I was delighted to consider them for my wedding. I weighed them against several other options including another local favorite (Icing on the Cake) - and the Buttery's designs, flavors, pricing & delivery made them a clear winner! My partner and I wanted a simple wedding cake with a timeless feel. We went with a combination of red velvet for the bottom layer and classic chocolate for the top two layers (and also ordered a sheet cake), and it could not have been more delicious. I might be biased, but it's simply the best cake in the world. The ordering process was also very smooth from inquiry to delivery on our wedding day. To all the other brides and grooms out there - don't hesitate! Thank you so much to the Buttery for making the cake of our dreams! :)

We really enjoy the cupcakes here, especially the buttercream ones! Whenever we visit our son in town, we always make sure to stop by. It’s a shame there isn’t one in LA. Also, my son liked the bacon breakfast burrito he had this morning, and the spicy tomato salsa that came with it was delicious!

Food was good, nothing out of the ordinary. Large portion and friendly service. Typical wait time for the food on a slow Sunday morning. I'd go again for the roasted potatoes and or the pastry

So many yummy pastries. I recommend the Marion berry danish and my wife loved the cherry danish. I liked the Oreo cupcake and my wife really enjoyed the lemon cupcake with a tart lemon curd inside. The kids didn't enjoy the ham and cheese croissant mostly because it had a lump of cheese in the center - had it been a bit better distributed throughout I think they would've enjoyed it. The croissant dough was made very well. Service was ok.

They make darn good pastries and cakes. Never tried their food, but he bakery side definitely has it going on. The Ganache is just divine. Their Pecan Sandies are amazing (they have ganache in the middle). They also make a wicked carrot cake. I'd say the buttery is definitely the go to place in Santa Cruz or cakes. I can't speak much to the flow in the space, but it is pretty small inside - although does have outdoor seating. Also seems like they could maybe use one more person working in the afternoon - both times I stopped in the afternoon the line moved pretty slowly (might not be the case in the morning).

Sadly, the Buttery no longer has the level of service and caring that it once did under the old management, Today I had a disturbing experience there that had nothing to do with food and everything to do with rip off. The salad that I was buying cost $15.25. I did not have any change, so I handed the server at the cash register $16.00. She proceeded to tell me that since they did not have any change, i would have to pay her $16.00 for the $15.25 item. What a way to generate unexpected income! I have never EVER heard of a business doing this. If they were not professional enough to have change in their change drawer, she should have forgiven me the .25. When I went to one of the businesses next door I mentioned this to the person who was helping me as I gave her a big tip. She said that this has been going on for quite some time. Won't go back. I call it stealing.

Awesome pastries, pies, and cakes. Really good food.Horrible espresso drinks. Why so bad? Why even bother?Get your Chocolate Croissant here and then go to the surf shop down the street for a great coffee.

We ordered a huge chocolate cake from here for a big birthday party. The bakery was recommended by some friends that live locally. We were so pleased with the service and the quality of the cake. It was absolutely delicious! Highly recommend this bakery!

Aha! New corporate/private equity owners. Thanks to the other reviewers who pointed that out. I'm still waiting for the option to give zero or negative stars. I got a croissant a couple weeks ago and noticed that they only accepted cash if we had correct change, or that we just wouldn't receive change if we didn't have it. Since the croissant was $3.75, I decided to let them have the extra quarter since I was in a hurry. But I wonder if that would have applied if I only had a twenty. Hmmmm. This is price discrimination, pure and simple. Those of us, for whatever reason (identity theft, can't afford to bank, crazy conspiracy theorist, whatever) who opt to pay cash and don't have the correct change, are now forced to pay extra for the exact same item because of their "policy", which amounts to theft. At least no one needs to even know how to pull the change out of the drawer and drop it on us in a big pile, much less actually make change. It's akin to a thief breaking into my house and getting away with it because I was warned up front. Just another company who has decided to take the covid-iocy fear of cash and continue to milk it. I'm surprised that there isn't a cash line so they can further marginalize us. Instead of masks, maybe dunce caps. Makes me want to carry around a big bag of pennies so I'll have exact change next time I'm confronted with this ridiculousness, except that it just causes those waiting behind me to be inconvenienced. Oh and guess what...that extra 2-4% tacked on to every electronic transaction is passed on to us in the form of even higher prices. I didn't notice that the croissant was better or worse than the last one I had probably 15 years ago. But now that one of the reviewers said they detected a Crisco flavor in their food, I'll definitely be boycotting. We can get Crisco frosting at Safeway, and - wonder of wonders - they still give change! If their butter, cream and eggs were from pasture-raised animals treated humanely, it might be worth it. But they probably just back up the Sysco truck and dump those huge plastic containers full of Crisco, ultra-pasteurized CAFO milk, and high fructose corn syrup. Yum! Too bad the BBB isn't actually a regulatory agency so that they might force an end to this thievery. At least for me, it's bye bye, Buttery!
