Always outstanding food and service! We were seated at the table for 2 that's by itself off to the left side when you walk in. It is the most undesirable table in the restaurant.
Really nice place in Santa Monica. The duck breast, roasted cauliflower and yellowtail crudo were excellent. Gracious table staff provided outstanding service. The hostess even chased us down and ran across the street to hand my wife the purse she forgot at our table.
This is a terrific restaurant. Truly reflects the best that California has to offer in a casual, unstuffy setting. Food is seasonal and creative. Desserts are incredible. Wine list is phenomenal and very reasonably priced.
The food was excellent and great service. Highly recommend the octopus and sticky toffee pudding.
food was outstanding. Excellent upbeat restaurant.. wine list a little pricey buto excellent choices. Service was impeccable.
Unbelievable food, ambience, and service! I would highly recommend this restaurant to everyone
Came with friends. We had a great time together. They have an Oxtail Dumpling that I immediately said I don't like. We ordered anyway, omg! It was my favorite thing!! Pineapple Basil Spritzer was delicious!! Warning, their shared plates are very small!!!
Tar & Roses is our family's favorite restaurant. Whenever we have people in from out of town or we want to go out with new friends or we just want a fun date night or to celebrate an occasion, we go there!!! The food and service is outstanding every time. Tar & Roses never disappoints! We love it!!!
High end comfort-food with great flavors and service. I would eat inside next time but not change much else. So good!
Excellent food and friendly service. Enjoyed the appetizers (especially the beet and feta dip) and the lemongrass risotto accompanying the black cod was just outstanding.

I've been going to Tar and Roses for years and the food is always excellent. Unfortunately, service can be hit or miss for any restaurant and T&R is no exception. I went to dinner there last night for my anniversary and has multiple issues related to service. On top of that, I'd indicated it was my anniversary and requested on the reservation that something special be done for my wife. Even a congratulations would have sufficed, but that was disregarded. The main issue every time we wanted anything - water, wine, ice, adding things to our order, I had to get the attention of the busser (who, by the way, was not only nice, but gave us fantastic service). I had a few other requests during dinner but had a hard time getting the server's attention. I even asked my bus boy if we could get another server. I've been a server in the past. and I go to restaurants now for great food and good service - otherwise, I would cook at home. It's supposed to be an experience. It's also the basis of which restaurant I choose - which has a good experience. When I'm out to dinner - especially on my anniversary - I shouldn't have to be looking for and flagging down my server for every request. It's not even a very large restaurant, nor did he seem to have that many tables. The food at T&R has always been excellent - four or five stars. The service on this occasion was a one-star. Sometimes you get a server that forgets that dining out is an experience, not one that should be taxing for customers. Thank goodness for the excellent busser!
Great food, excellent service. We had to wait outside for a while to get our table and were just starting to get annoyed when we were offered a glass of sparkling wine to compensate for the wait - much appreciated! Would return any time.
something I don't...visited Tar&Roses recently for an anniversary dinner and I was unfortunately disappointed. When we arrived, the restaurant was packed with a few groups standing outside steadily until 8:30 pm which gives the illusion that this place is a hot spot. I was so excited to eat here. After dining, I am still unclear about the type of restaurant it's supposed to be. It seems like wood-fired cooking is a highlight (they highlight the wood that's burning that evening) so I expected to be able to taste or even smell smoke but there was none 🤷🏾♀️. Here's what we ordered: - oxtail dumplings: 3/5, good flavor but honestly nothing too heavy write home about. To me, the best part was the sauce that's drizzled on top. - Duck bruschetta: 3/5, again nothing to write home about. This was served on one slice of sourdough bread that was cut in half. My husband and I both found the jam and balsamic vinegar to be overpowering and too sweet. - Singaporean crab cake: 4/5, the crab cake was delectable. Delicate, yummy, soft. Unfortunately we felt like the sweet chili sauce surrounding it was again overpowering and too sweet. It's served in a big puddle of the sauce which encourages scooping up heaping amounts of sauce; I think it's actually better with less sauce. - Hangar steak with kale & potato and bacon gratin: 3/5, the steak was a perfect medium and I liked the sauce that was served with it. It tasted akin to teriyaki sauce and my husband commented that maybe it would be better placed at a Japanese bbq spot, which I could definitely see. The potato and bacon gratin left much to be desired. It was bland, hard, and got cold quickly. I did enjoy the kale it was served with and wished it came with more. We ended our dining experience there, opting not to get dessert for our anniversary dinner. I'd also hoped we'd get a little dessert comped for the occasion but that doesn't seem to be something they do here
The food was interesting and delicious. We loved the oxtail dumplings, butternut squash and lamb.
My wife and I came here exactly four years ago for my birthday and remembered having a fantastic time- the service was amazing and the food outstanding, especially the fried snapper. When we came back this time, everything we remembered was exactly the same. We truly appreciate the consistency and the high standard this restaurant continues to maintain. Thank you for another wonderful experience. We'll definitely be back again!
