Yeah, it's from the 40s alright. Someone should share a calendar with them or maybe The Bill of Rights and Civil Rights Amendment. I used to really like going here for lunch a long time go, about 23 years back. I worked across the street at an e-commerce firm that rented offices there. The food was good, the place was busy, hopping with patrons all the time, around the clock. It was after I returned to work late multiple times that I began to notice something... weird about the place. I went back one more time to confirm I hadn't imagined it, and unfortunately, I had been correct. I really liked their chilli cheese dogs and chilli cheese fries as well. They were very good, smoky, and flavorful. The Real Deal.
What I noticed? Routinely, when I would place an order it would be reluctantly taken, then the person who took it would immediately demand payment in full before putting the order in to the kitchen.
No big deal right? They were swamped, daily. Extremely busy. I do my best to be understanding of people with hard, low paying jobs. I understand, things can be demanding at times.
Sometimes I didn't have cash on me so I'd present my debit card, which again was very reluctantly accepted. Meanwhile I saw that people who had arrived 15 minutes to half an hour after I had were seated and eating. Again they were very busy, some things can slip through the cracks in that sort of environment. I tried very hard to be understanding.
Then came the last straw. I saw that people of distinctly European descent didn't have to pay until after their orders were ready, though everyone of African descent, as am I, were not allowed to do so. They all had to pay first, then wait, often reminding the staff multiple times that they hadn't yet been served.
I didn't cause a scene, I didn't tell any of my coworkers, I didn't sue them. I just... STOPPED GOING THERE. I was more than pleased to go to CARROWS (unfortunately out of business now) which was much closer to my job and had far better service.
I worked second shift at my job, in Customer Service. I never had breakfast there, only lunch. I would have gone to CARROWS for breakfast.
Interior seating was limited, quite sparse, considering the crowds. There was patio seating on the sidewalk nearby, with minimal shade provided by small trees. If only I could have been fed more quickly. ?

A convenient place for breakfast during my stay in Santa Monica. Good food, very friendly and smiling staff. The omelettes are delicious and the yogurt, fruit and granola bowl is delicious!

As a tourist, the interior reminded me of the cafe we always go to in Gilmore Girls, this is a very welcoming place. Coffee and breakfast were good.

My company orders breakfast from here weekly, it's the only place we can all agree upon to eat at because it's that good. Pro tip, get the Egg Sammie, the garlic spread is delicious.

This is a hole in the wall Cafe that's serve high quality food. I was thrilled to eggs and it was the real stuff not that powdered mix type of eggs. Daughter got pancakes of course which were on the spot. Wife got some chorizo dish that she enjoyed. Definitely going to make it a go-to spot for brunch.
