Delightful restaurant - intimate dining experience Delicious meals: Veal & halibut plated beautifully. Wonderful and pleasant hostess. Server was very accommodating and we appreciated his service.

As visitors to Santa Rosa we had high hopes for this place. The space is small and cute, although a bit outdated. To be fair, if you're a fan of old school French, with heavy proteins and sauces, this place might suit you. For us, it fell a little flat. The highlights included the escargot, pate, and the cabernet sorbet. I enjoyed the salad that came with the entrees, however my wife did not. She had the Cog au Vin and it just wasn't all that great, plus one of the pieces was overcooked and quite dry. To the restaurant's credit, they did fire a new piece that was cooked nicely, but still just a bit heavy on the sauce. I had the Veal Cordon Bleu and it was like eating a brick. Heavily coated and fried dark with a sauce just as heavy and dark. The whole meal and vibe felt like something from 1970. The service was nice, but wasn't great. We had empty water glasses for long stretches during the meal, and if you're going to serve old school, heavy meals, water at the table is a must at all times.

We heard really good things about La Gare and also read some very positive reviews, so we made reservations here for dinner. Our server was friendly and helpful, but the food was mediocre… definitely far from that “French” style, not even a Country French style. The menu was loaded with many options for dinner and appetizers. We started with a shrimp appetizer (Prawns sautéed Provençale) which was described as sautéed, but when it came to the table, it was fried shrimp with a sauce. I mentioned to the server that I wasn’t aware it was fried and he said it was pan sautéed? Not sure how that means fried – but oh well.

I got their creamy mushroom soup to start and it was a watery, nasty soup with flavors I couldn’t guess. My wife got their tomato soup and that was awesome. Their butter lettuce salad to start was also very fresh and very good. My entrée was Poulet Marco Polo and the sauce in it was tasty, though more creamy than providing depth of flavor. The chicken was dry and a basic chicken breast tossed in a sauce. The side veggies were actually more flavorful than the chicken.

Overall – It was decent, but far from what we expect from a French restaurant with such great reviews.

We have been coming here since it opened and it's just the same. We love the predictable soup( although prefer when it's mushroom, not vegetable), butter lettuce salad, salmon and halibut with vegetables, nice dinner rolls and delicious dessert. Plain butter and cheese pasta for the grandkids was not on the menu but happily prepared. The prices have gone up but that's everywhere. Portions are not too big but are just the right size. It's our go to special occasion restaurant!

Absolutely terrible food! Service was the worst I’ve had in YEARS. Drink orders were taken 25 mins apart, food was brought out 40mins apart (and took around an hour to get), salads were brought out 15 mins after we were done eating dinner, when we were getting the check.
Not to mention you don’t even have a choice of soup or salad on the menu and are forced to have the daily one they make even if you don’t want it, or want a different one. I left hungry and had better food at a bar nearby that cost 1/4 of the price and was much better tasting.

Waitress was rude, rushed and unhelpful. She didn’t even take people’s drink orders - who wanted them, because she was in such a rush and was so careless.

Not to mention extremely over priced. Would never recommend or go again. Frankly, shocked to see people in the restaurant.

We went tonight to celebrate my daughter’s college graduation. The atmosphere was so lovely, it was like we walked into Paris! The wine was superb. The dinner was Halinut( superb) SFilet Mignon for the graduate, tremendous and Prawns , the best I’ve ever eaten! Soup and salad included and a lovely roll that was perfection! And, wait for it! Chocolate Mousse the best I ever had, Creme Brulee , the best I’ve ever had! Our waiter Keith was like having our son tend to us on mother’s day!

Top notch service and top notch environment. Food is good but no wow factors. Tried the beef Wellington and it was very tender. It is a little pricy but it was worth it. I will keep it short for you to explore. Will visit again if I’m in the area.

We celebrated our 40th anniversary with an absolutely spectacular meal. The service was impeccable right from the greeting at the front door. Our server was just attentive enough not too much. And the food was delicious. It's lovely to go to a restaurant these days that actually doesn't serve everything à la carte. We had a yummy soup a light salad and Perfectly cooked steak and prime rib dinners desserts were fantastic. I had crème brûlée and my husband had the sticky toffee pudding. And they brought us this beautiful chocolate mousse for our anniversary. We will definitely be back.

La Gare is a timeless slice of Switzerland in the heart of Santa Rosa. We have been going there for quite a few years, and nothing has changed, which is oddly comforting.

Food was bland. The quiche Lorraine appetizer was the best thing we had in a 4 course meal. The atmosphere was unimpressive. Service was good.
