Ordered a margarita and it was undrinkable, pure alcohol. I asked for something not so strong and the server brought out a cup of sour mix for me to pour into my drink. The sour mix tasted like it was store bought, pre-made. The worst margarita I’ve ever had.

I love Fidel so much! They have such good Mexican food and a variety of different dishes that my family and I both really enjoy. The atmosphere and the layout of the restaurant is so unique and very special with quite a lot of history! The staff here are all so kind and really wonderful! Definitely our favorite Mexican restaurant in town!

This is the Mexican restaurant next-door to Tony’s Jacal. We wanted Tony's, but because the wait was 180 minutes at 5pm, we went next door and were seated, as there was no wait. The staff is great. But the food was very sloppy. I brought my family of 5 and the overuse of dripping wet lettuce made each plate of dinner a mess. All the food tasted fine, but at an average of $23+ a plate (not including tax and tip). I don’t want my food to look like a fast food place run by minors. The salsa had no love, just thin and lacking the taste you’d expect of salsa. Honest mistake, as all three drinks were clear, but our cocktails were mixed up, that only turns into a big deal if someone at your table orders the Mezcal! (Yuck surprise!)

We are there on Monday, all ordered the chicken but 2 of us ordered the chimichangas. It tasted old and dry but wrote it off, until later that night when we were faced with horrendous illness. It’s been 3 days of relentless sickness, the doctors believe we have salmonella poisoning. I would avoid at all costs, not only is it overpriced and low quality but you WILL get deathly ill. Good vibe, but that’s the only thing they have going for them.

My family and I have been on a hunt for a Mexican restaurant that can compete with Natis, which sadly closed. A family friend suggested Fidel's and we have absolutely fallen in love with this place. It's the oldest Mexican restaurant in San Diego, being open since 1945. Its traditionally authentic every which way, from the decor, the music and the food is absolutely amazing. Its hidden away in an unassuming neighborhood in Del Mar but it's very close to the racetrack. Even if you don't like Mexican food, you will after eating here.

Extremely disappointing for San Diego. It’s so easy to find good Mexican food in SD but Fidel’s was particularly disappointing - very low quality and not cheap in price either. We got 5 dishes… Sour cream was clumpy and had an odd texture, and every single dish we ordered was drenched in not so tasty cheap cheese. It’s a long standing business so I’m not sure what’s happened but the flavors aren’t good even if it was half the price. The atmosphere is great and the service is good

We've been going there for years and the food has disappointingly gone down hill. We keep giving them another chance in case they're having an 'off night' but that's not the case. The service is so so. To top it off, while the place still had 45 minutes until closing, the crew was dismantling the chairs - taking the cushions out of the seats and being very noisy while doing so. No way to treat customers while they're trying to relax and enjoy their evening.

I wanted to give more stars...they get a 5 in the service, a 5 for the decorations and asthenics. But the food was just ok! Will come back because I had a great time.

Great food. Love the atmosphere. The skinny margaritas are wonderful
They do need to clean their bathrooms better.
