This is a cute little cafe that could be so much more. I'm giving it a three out of five because the sandwiches were really good! If you go, forewarned! This was my first visit there; it was on a Saturday morning, the establishment was fairly empty when I arrived. I believe there was a birthday party or some celebration being held in the separate room Shaw has. Based on the raves of my two friends who had eaten there often AND some of the reviews I read, I was expecting the very, very best. So let me break this review into several areas: sandwiches, soup, and beverages, bakery, service, and ambience. SANDWICHES etc: We ordered thee turkey sandwich, BLTA, and the tuna. All three were excellent. The ingredients and bread were fresh. I ordered a cup of their Lentil soup for us to taste. The size was more 3/4 of a cup! The soup was good. It had an unusual flavor (maybe tahini?) but tasted more like pea soup than lentil. For beverages: peach iced tea (I wondered what happened to the peach aspect and the ice), coffee (lots of grounds), and water (good choice, served with ice and nice and cold) BAKERY: One of our group bought brownies to take home. I had a small taste of one. They were a bit flat, nothing exceptional For my husband and daughter at home, I purchased four snickerdoodle cookies, two cinnamon rolls, and two slices of banana bread. They were all unique and not in a good sense. The snickerdoodles were flat flat flat, the dough had no taste whatsoever (very floury) there was a very light dusting of cinnamon sugar. We didn't finish them. On to the banana bread. Do you like fruit cake? If so you'll like this banana bread. It was exceptionally dense and the bananas were missing. We didn't finish the two pieces of banana bread either. Maybe the cinnamon rolls will be better. They looked amazing. The good aspect stopped there. Both were hard as rocks. If these were day old they should have been sold as such. These were not finished either. VERY disappointed. SERVICE: If I had been alone I would have left. SLOW SLOW SLOW. However, we were having a good time chatting so the time passed pleasantly. The individuals taking orders were neither pleasant nor rude. I believe it's called a flat affect. There was nothing there at all. At least they weren't surly. The delivery person mirrored the others, plus exceptionally slow. There were NO offers to refill water or the coffee. Remember, when we came at 11:30 the cafe was basically empty. Our plan for an hour maybe hour and a half lunch came it at just over two hours. Again, how grateful we were for good conversation. AMBIENCE: LOUD! Tables were left unbusssed and not cleaned off. Will I go back? Probably not. If I do, I'll only have a sandwich with the fruit (it was fresh) and I'll likely bring my own water bottle!

I love that they carry a variety of delicious pastries and everything was great, until we saw the person who prepared our food handling my daughters grilled cheese sandwich with no gloves and she had long nails, then she wiped her hands on her dirty apron ? I wanted to come on here to give this constructive criticism so they are careful because people are watching and its very important to be sanitary especially when you are preparing someone's food.

Ordered an iced matcha with vanilla and it was way too sweet. Felt like I was drinking vanilla milk. There was no matcha taste to it.

Today I visited the House of Shaw Cafe. They were not busy when I arrived. I placed my to go order. Hot pastrami sandwich, a buttered croissant, a Diet Pepsi and a water. There was one Order in front of mine. Right after my order was placed several more orders were taken. My order and the other to go order were placed at the end of the line. This resulted in a 25 minute wait and got me a cold dry pastrami sandwich and a butter less croissant. Normally I would brush it off, but not today as the male staff were rude when ordering and felt they didn't need to make the order as requested.

The food is fresh, healthy. The new owners much more friendly and civilized as opposed to the prior owners, not cliquey. However, they need to step it up on keeping the windows cleaner.

I feel they can be a bit friendlier & have better drink selection. I don't visit very often. Cute little place to catch up with your bestie.

The Stanley croissant is amazing! Flaky, buttery and they give you almost a half avocado on the side. Aioli is rich and creamy. Very satisfying vegetarian option!!

It's so fresh... and so clean... from the crispy lettuce, to the shiny tables... and friendly service... I couldn't ask for more on a Friday. The bacon was so crisp too as well as the avocados and tomatoes.... That banana bread was "saved@ for later and is decadent. I was perusing through the reviews of my fave Stocktonian YELP Elites (iykyk)... and they influenced me to check it out today. They know the spots . Check out @Alissa M.'s reviews and Antonio D. M.'s reviews for some cool tips. SYOY

Unwelcoming girl at front. I haven't been here in probably a year and I just thought that they were open till 430 which they're not so she put my coffee in a to go cup. Assuming I knew that. I didn't even feel like sticking around for five minutes longer. I asked her several questions and she just seemed like she could care less to answer them. It's very unfortunate because I really like the atmosphere of this place but for this shit I can go to Starbucks.

I really want to love Shaw's again, and we've been trying Sunday brunch every other weekend for four months, but there are still two very serious issues. 1. Customer service is nonexistent. Servers and wait staff never check on our coffee. If I go to the counter with my coffee cup to refill, the wait is normally five minutes for someone to even say hi or ask what I need. It's just awful. It also causes problem number two; 2. When our food arrives, it has never even been warm. I finally sat where I could watch the service counter. Our order sat on the counter for TEN MINUTES before someone picked it up. smh Unfortunately, we'll be going elsewhere on the Mile from now on, even though we've been loyal even before it changed owners. Sorry guys, I can not recommend it for Sunday brunch any longer.

What a delightful spot this is! Great atmosphere, incredibly delicious food, and a friendly, professional crew that does all they can to ensure your dining experience is top-notch. Plus, their baked goods are amazing, and the variety is excellent. They always seem to have seasonal items to entice the taste buds along with the all-time favorites we keep going back for when something sweet starts calling our names.Sweet or savory, House of Shaw has got what you're looking for in casual, bistro style dining. Definitely try it!
