CLOSED - and I'm not happy about it! Was bought out by the sushi place down the street and will reopen soon as Kobuso. I'll try to keep an open mind, but I LOVED Nippon and am sad to see them go. I hope the same staff is there when they reopen - they were always very nice and the food was great!

So this was a regular weekly lunch spot for us from the office until last week. They have changed their policy and now no longer give refillable soda. That being said they still provide fountain soda but at $2.50 and not refillable that's crazy. It might seem stupid to nix a restaurant on their drinks policy, but it goes to principal for me, and to top it off they don't tell you - it just shows up on their bill. Fortunately Burbank has some other good ones so we'll be moving on from here

This is my go-to spot for sushi when I'm at work in Burbank. There are a few others in the area but after trying all of them, we keep going back to Nippon. The staff is always welcoming and the food is great. The albacore sushi is out of control. No place I've tried elsewhere had even come close.

What is great about this place is not necessary the decoration, but it's the amount of food you get for the price! We are used to eat in Montreal in japanese restaurant, especially for sushis, so we know how many rolls we order normally, and we based ourselves on that. Surprise! The rolls was double the size we are used too, so we end up having food for five people when we were only two! Everything was delicious, our waitress was shy but oh so kind, she was making sure we had everything we need. The bill was what we normally have, but remember we have more food than usual, so you understand it's cheap. This restaurant is not stylish at all, but it felt like we entered in a family restaurant, as we entered and as we exit, the staff was all saying out loud 'good bye' in japanese I guess... If you happen to pass by this restaurant, and want sushis or japanese food, we recommend you try this one!

We had some time to kill while we waited for Conan's taping to start so we ventured out to get some lunch. I spotted (miraculously) from the car Nippon so we found some street parking nearby and headed in. Nippon is a fairly small restaurant (can fit about 45-50 people max) but has a nice, quaint family style vibe. All the workers and sushi chefs are Japanese so that was a good sign! Only a few people were there but couple of people came in for takeout. We were there on an off hour on a Monday afternoon but I'm sure they are busier during peak times. Anyways, for the food, we ordered a couple of lunch specials and way too much sushi: Lunch Specials (about $10-12 each) - Tempura and Spicy tuna bento box ($1 extra for spicy tuna) - you get a lot of food including miso soup, salad, bowl of rice and some vegetables. Pretty good value for your money! Sashimi (each order you get two pieces for about $5/order) - Salmon - Japanese scallop - Scallop - Red tuna Sushi - Crunchy treat roll - imitation crab with spicy tuna and tempura bits in a sweet soya sauce - New Toluca roll - spicy tuna and white tuna on top of the rolls - Rainbow roll We found the sushi and sashimi to be pretty good (100 times better than anything back home). Lots of food and good value, especially with the specials. Our total was about $75-80 before tip.

I went here for a quick work lunch. It's a quick in and out for lunch. The staff was pleasant and helpful with recommendations. The crab and avocado appetizer was good and the tuna and yellowtail sashimi tasted fresh. I like their green iced tea too. My co worker had a teriyaki chicken bento box which she liked.

I had bigger expectations for this place...I'll start with the good... Came here with a friend as she and I didn't really want to wait for 45 mins at Sushi Yuzu The service was very good, people were nice and attentive, however it was very slow. This inside of the place could use some refurbishing... Now, the quality of the fish is simply not there...the price is pretty much average. Some of the special rolls are $12...not worth it. The lobster roll is eh...I read some of the reviews for this place where people are raving about it...really?! You havent had a good lobster roll!!! We also tried the Toluca Roll...bait and switch dude...an amazing picture of it on the menu and the roll comes out looking pretty unlike the photo. The tuna is average, maybe even slightly below and the mackerel is ok... Maybe for some of the other Japanese food they serve it works, but I came in for the sushi. I won't be back...if you want good sushi and you're in this area, just wait in line at Sushi Yuzu across the street

I love Nippon. The sushi is very good, they have decent prices and the chefs are great. I like that it's small and quiet - fits in well on Riverside Dr in Toluca Lake.

I really like this place. Very decent sushi even for snobs, but not pretentious of overpriced (the benefit of being OFF Ventura Blvd., I suppose). My bf and I used to go here all the time...not sure why we haven't been recently. I am suddenly craving a sashimi platter...Jeff! We're going to Nippon tonight :)

After a long day of random errands and museums, my friends and I were on the lookout for something Asian to eat for dinner. One of them suggested bento and the race was on. The first place we went to at a nearby shopping center with a Vons was closed. The second place, Nippon Restaurant, was also closed, but the place was about to open and they let us in after we tried opening the locked door. Score one for Nippon. Sadly, things go downhill from here. Checking out the menu, the prices looked okay. More expensive than what I'm used to, but that could be evidence of better quality, right? We decided to give the place a whirl, especially since the servers were speaking Japanese. After waiting for a few minutes for the restaurant to open, we were seated, received our menus, and proceeded to figure out what to order. The menus were a bit confusing since sometimes it looked like you would only get one choice of three for the bentos, when you actually get everything that is listed. Eventually we figured out what we wanted to order. I got a fried oyster bento with avocado/eel roll, and chicken teriyaki. My friends got a broiled fish benta with dynamite roll, and salmon teriyaki bento. Each came with salad, rice, and miso soup. The salad, although a really nice assortment of greens and color, was way too strong in taste. The dressing was mayo-based, but way too thick and overpowering. The fried oyster was large--there were three pieces. Each piece, though, was primarily made up of tempura batter. The eel/avocado roll was a little over an inch and a half in diameter. It was pretty standard, though, in terms of fast food sushi eateries with teriyaki sauce poured over the top, sprinkled with white sesame seeds. Last but not least, the chicken teriyaki was pretty boring--cooked pieces of, not even high quality chicken, slathered in teriyaki sauce. All in all, the place was not a good value at all. I would expect to pay no more than half of what I paid for my meal--approximately the amount that I would pay for sushi/bento at a fast food Japanese place. If you have the choice of coming to this restaurant or a fast food Japanese eatery, I would suggest the fast food place. Your expectations will be set much lower and you'll probably feel better overall as a result.

To those who complain about Nippon, I say "Good riddance! By all means, go to the latest trendy, expensive place and eat over-priced sushi!!" I love this little authentic Japanese restaurant with its delicious food, charming decor, gracious owner, and excellent service. I find their sushi tasty and well-priced. Their bento boxes are generous, and their miso soup is divine. My husband and I have enjoyed Nippon for years, and have never had a bad meal.

I picked up about $80 worth of sushi and small dishes to go a few nights ago and it was just "Okay" I have been here a handful of times and I really like the servers and the service was fine. Just the food seems to get more blah everytime. I lived in Japan for a few years so maybe I am spoiled with good Japanese food. I really liked the older decor because it reminds me of Japan in the late 80's early 90's. I realized after the last order I probably won't be getting food from here anymore. Kinda pricey for just okay sushi.

I have had worse I have had better. Parking is kind of a pain for lunch. Place could use some sproocing.

I don't care what anyone says, this restaurant is authentic Japanese with all the people (except maybe the bus boys and the dishwashers) that work here are Japanese. Their food is great and their standards are not low. Mushy rice? Authentic Japanese style rice is somewhat on the wet side, you guys have no idea what you're talking about when it comes to Japanese food... They do a good job.
