I've been working in Truckee and I hate eating out. But this place makes food like it's home cooked. If you eat here early between 5:30am-7:00 you a discount on your food. I highly recommend getting the gumbo as a side. I've been telling all of my coworkers about this place. They tried it and they loved it. You won't be disappointed if you do.

I dropped in in the morning for a quick breakfast. Honestly, my first impression was bad. I waited at counter for at least 2 minutes while I watched the server chatting with two CHP officers without even looking around. She was the only server in the café. I was pretty annoyed. She took my order amd ended up being pretty pleasant so ended up a positive experience but still not the first impression I should have gotten. They need to do better. I would stop in again but still....

Arrived at about 6:30 am for breakfast and the place was slightly busy.

Placed the order for egg and it was served as ordered, along with their own home made strawberry jam and nicely baked bread.

The interior design was quite unique and the service was quite active and the lady did a great job in checking in more frequently.

Also, I had one of the best Americano coffee. Don’t forget to order the cheese, which was great and healthy. I liked the way the invoice was written and described.

Thanks to the chef and the support team. Will return for breakfast whenever passing from SLT.

Stopped in on our way back home, and I’m so glad we chose this breakfast spot! Our server (dark hair, glasses—sorry I didn’t catch her name) was fantastic—friendly, genuine, easy to talk to, and made us feel right at home. The food was absolutely delicious, service was quick, everything was clean (even the bathrooms!), and to top it all off, it’s dog-friendly for well-behaved pups.

We even got to meet the “door greeter”—the cutest, most polite little dog—who came over, laid by my feet, and completely made my day since I couldn’t bring my own pups on this work trip. Thank you for such a wonderful experience! I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in the area.

Hidden germ! Hard to find a traditional diner like this anymore. We enjoyed our brunch here. You can tell that the chef put some effort into making the food.
Hash browns - it’s amazing! We have tried quite a lot of diners and lots of them are just okay. This place has crunchy but not fried hash brown!! It’s so addicting to keep eating!
Pancake - it has some crunch in it, so good! Never had something like this good before at a diner, well or at home. lol
Sausage - 100/100 give it a try!

For us petite ladies who can’t eat the whole breakfast, I am so glad that I can order junior size! For guys, their portion is quite good! You won starve afterwards.

I love the decor in this place. And I love supporting small business!! Will come back soon!

I found a piece of plastic in my food and the manager did absolutely nothing about it. She didn’t even apologize or bring me new food.

If you haven't been, you need to go. It's a place like it use to be back in the good old days. Very friendly and has lots of hospitality.

Disappointed After 30 Years of Visits

I’ve been coming to Wagon Train Coffee Shop for over 30 years, but unfortunately, this last visit may be my last—unless I’m truly out of options again.

We stopped in with three dads and two toddlers after finding Donner Lake Kitchen closed and Squeeze In too busy. I was hoping it would be a solid fallback, but the food just didn’t deliver. Everything we ordered felt heavy, bland, and unhealthy. Honestly, it reminded me of eating at a Denny’s—but at a higher price point.

The total came to around $100 (before tip), which felt steep for what we got. On the bright side, our waitress was fantastic—super friendly and attentive—and the quirky decorations inside are still a highlight. But good service and fun decor can only carry a place so far.

If Wagon Train wants to stay relevant, especially to folks bringing out-of-town guests or trying to eat a little better, they really need to add healthier options to the menu. Something like bagel and lox, avocado toast, oatmeal—anything lighter or fresher—would make a big difference. And frankly, the current offerings could use a quality upgrade across the board.

Hoping to see some changes in the future. This place has history, but it needs to evolve.

Fast service. Great tasting food!!! (I’m a food snob BTW). Never been here but will be here again. And it’s family owned?

Do yourself a favor. Come here!!
