I had a Mi Quian. It is a dish I never had before. Not something you’ll see in regular Vietnamese restaurant outside of Westminster. It yellow dry noodle with dipping soup served on the side. It is topped with sliced pork, large prawn. Really really enjoyed it.I have to note most of the tables around me ordered the wrap thing that comes with noodles in cubed form and various toppings. Will try that next time.

As soon as I sat down and saw the menu, I knew I was in for a treat. The menu is completely in Vietnamese (well, except for the headers which is funny because if you can read the food names you probably can read Vietnamese headers.) I love authentic food from various regions of the world. When I travel, I like to ask police officers and taxi drivers where the locals eat. My belief in the authenticity of the food was confirmed when their side sauce was shrimp paste. A lot of people find the aroma of shrimp paste overwhelming. Anyway, I got number 20 on the menu, the special Nha Trang fish noodle soup. It was very tasty and came with fresh vegetables to add to the soup. I look forward to coming back and trying other authentic dishes on the menu.

Nice service, good food, not much else you can ask for. I always order their bun mam, that one is the best.

Alright, grab some popcorn and settle in, because the tale of my escapades at Son Kieu is one for the foodie books. First up on the menu of expectations was Bun Bo Hue, the crown jewel of Vietnamese cuisine, right? Oh, but what arrived was a bowl of liquid so boring, even tap water would roll its eyes and say, "Get a personality, will ya?" Seriously, folks, tap water would be the life of the party compared to this snoozefest in a bowl. Now, moving on to the Bánh khọt debacle. Imagine a cloning experiment gone wrong but with shrimp. It's as if the chef hit the "Copy All" button and then wandered off for a smoke break, leaving the printer to churn out an army of identically bland crustaceans. It's like an episode of "Black Mirror," but you know, with shrimp.Ah, but here comes the pièce de résistance, the Bun Mam. Or should I say, the pièce de "resist, please don't eat me because I have zero flavor." This dish had all the excitement of a tax audit. It's as if the Bun Mam was prepped by a disillusioned librarian who had read too many dystopian novels about the end of flavor. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy, and I include the guy who took the last parking space at the grocery store. Here's the kicker: I've been to this culinary comedy club THREE times! Why, you ask? Because I'm a hopeless optimist and a sucker for supporting local haunts. But after my latest foray, I'd honestly rather eat those packing peanuts you get in Amazon boxes. They'd probably have a more complex flavor profile. So, if you've ever wondered what it's like to play Russian Roulette with your taste buds, or if you're considering a career in food criticism and need to build up a tolerance for disaster, Son Kieu is your place. Don't say you weren't warned!

Service: The usual. Don't expect anything great just because it's a casual fast paced environment. Unfortunately the restaurant is a little too crowded for my liking and I am not claustrophobic. My friend raved about the bun mam, but I have had much better elsewhere. I forgave her though, this is the first time one of her recommendations failed short. :) She also mentioned she frequents this place often only for the bun mam because she said everything else is just ok to her. I believe it because it's coming from her but remember this is all subjective. I think for me it was lacking the mam- it wasnt strong enough in flavor.

Son Kieu is gaining popularity for its Hue cuisine. The place is usually packed during lunch and dinner. Hue dishes are known for its preparation, decorative appearance, and rich flavors. I was there for lunch and had the Bun Mam. Service was quick and the size portion is quite generous. This soup dish was colorful and a roller coaster of different flavors. It was fishy, sweet, sour, soft, and crunchy. Overall it was very tasteful and definitely a recommend. I will be back to try their Bun Bo Hue next.

If you are tired of eating phở or bún bò huế , would recommend trying their bún mắm! Super flavorful, rich umami flavors, and a nice balance of lemon grass in the bún mắm.I personally like my bún mắm with the thinner rice noodles. As someone who comes from miền tây Vietnam, their bún mắm is on point and tastes like the ones in Vietnam.

Mình đến ăn bún bò, mì xào phá lấu, bún đậu mắm tôm với trà mãng cầu. Everything was good especially the bún bò. Bún bò was super good and it tasted like the bún bò I had in Vietnam. The owner was extremely nice and cute too. I will definitely come back for more.
