Love this place and everything they're doing! Food is great, drinks are delicious. Good service, friendly waitstaff. The place as a whole is a vibe. They are definitely bringing something different to the uptown whittier area, way to forge your own path in a land full of tacos. ;-P

I rarely post reviews on Yelp anymore because it's just full of food influencers now, which is just... blah. Anyway, that's not what this review is about. This was my first time checking out this bar and I can't believe I've never been here. Although, I've never really hung out in Whittier, so that's probably why. I love this place. Rustic hipster-ish vibe kind of reminded me of a spot in LA without having to deal with the LA crowd. Music volume was perfect. Not earsplittingly loud so you could have a conversation. Menus were clean and not sticky. Service was 11/10. Everyone was so damn nice and attentive. Food was on point. I really liked the smoked ceviche. Drinks were meticulously crafted and the beer selection was great. This will be my first stop every visit to Whittier and it should be yours too.

A group of friends and I came here after a failed attempt at another restaurant and all I can say is I couldn't have been happier. Thankfully we beat the rush and were able to be seated as soon as we walked in. We started off with some drinks and a charcuterie board. The drinks were absolutely delicious and the board was even better. The jam was soooo good! We ordered the steak, ceviche and pozole. Everything was so flavorful and hearty! 10/10 would come back here. Aside from the food and drinks being delicious, the service was top notch. We had different servers checking in on us, waters being refilled without having to ask, etc. it's the little things like that that really put some restaurants over others. The restaurant itself is very intimate so it's good for small groups or dates.

Completely revamped restaurant: they recently got their license to sell spirits and hard liquor so now they offer a variety of cocktails as well as whiskey, tequilas and other spirits. The interior has different decor and lighting which feels more upscale than before. Music is still pretty loud and you need to shout to hear others. It looks intimate from the outside but it's not entirely and it's hard to talk over the music. The food menu also changed and their beer offering reduced! Which is a slight disappointment because their tacos and nachos used to be the best and the beers they used to carry was a solid selection! To their defense, they mentioned everyone is doing tacos (although I'd beg to differ because there are a lot of taco trucks, but not enough sit down restaurants who offer "craft" tacos). Regardless, we tried the duck taco and was delicious and so was the clam chowder (which tastes almost like the one at Crooked Gaff, on the salty savory side). I like that they kept their menu small, offering one item per "category", ie 1 taco, 1 meat dish, a few seafood and some bar snack. The staff was attentive and friendly and almost feels like they create a whole other vibe. The restaurant does cater to younger folks and the ambiance almost feels like the restaurant down the street: Rokka.

Cool bar. Dim and intimate inside. Kinda dark though, wouldn't mind more light. A good spot for small groups or a casual date. The cocktails are good. The food is an eclectic mix. They also have a happy hour Mon-Fri 5-7. There's a parking structure up the street on Greenleaf or some lots within a few blocks.

Nice little bar in Whittier. Inside is a little dark but intimate. Maybe I need glasses but I wouldn't mind a little more light to make it easier to read the menu. Decent amount of seating for the space. It's a good place for small groups or a casual date. The cocktails are tasty. Got the Angsta'a paradise and hibiscus margarita. Really good. Cocktails are $13-18. The food menu is eclectic. Definitely going for more gastropub than bar food. Got the hummus and duck tacos. Those were good. They also have a happy hour Mon-Fri 5-7 so I'll have to check that out. Service was good. Friendly staff. There's a free parking structure up the street in Greenleaf or other lots within a block or two.

This place is amazing, we didn't try much of the food besides the olive tapenade which was served with delicious toasted bread. We definitely will be back to try more items. The ambiance is awesome, it's very dark with great music playing with lit candles. The service was amazing, I wish I knew his name. The drinks were great. I had a class in Negroni and Hibiscus Mezcal Marg.

A very mysterious and intriguing bar, in a perfect location. I loved the dark ambiance and decor. Came in on a Wednesday night, knowing it wouldn't be too busy. We ordered the Pork Belly Tacos, Cesar Salad, ceviche and shrimp and grits plate. All the plates were great, my favorite was the shrimp and grits. I was a bit disappointed that some items listed on Yelp aren't available anymore but the food we ordered made up for it. I also had old fashioned drink. The customer service was excellent.

Great place to have a cocktail and catch up. The ambiance and vibes are amazing here and the service is incredible. Lots of fun and creative cocktails and a good selection of happy hour items. Such a fun spot that I will absolutely come back to again to start a fun night out in uptown.

First time here, the bartender’s service was extremely good, made a few tasty drinks. The duck tacos is a must try and the tri-tip salad is pretty refreshing after eating the tacos. Only down side to the restaurant is they need better vents. The raw onion smell was so strong, both myself and my wife’s eyes were irritated.

I have been here more times than I can remember! Things I love: the vibe, the staff, kernel of truth tortillas (for their tacos) Things I loved: (yep..past tense) their drinks and pork belly tacos, the larger variety of tacos on their menu When I first found this spot (while looking for kernel of truth tortillas), I made sure everyone I knew KNEW about this place and came! The drinks were delicious and the tacos were out of this world! Present day tacos have loads of spicier than before sauce. I'm not sure if it's a new cook or what? But if this were my first time coming here, I probably wouldn't be coming back. I scraped off the sauce to enjoy the pork belly and realized why it was doused with spicy sauce- it wasn't that great. I'm super sad. But don't take my experience for yours; come and give it a try yourself. Street parking only.

This is a hidden gem in Whittier that most people don't know about. With so many places up and down the street, its easy to overlook. But i think, that this place is worth a reconsideration. The beer selection is wide and offers something for almost everyone. Although it doesnt stand out like a few of the other places, I always know when I come to the Commoner, I'll have a great experience.
