This has been my home grocery store for 3+ years. Unfortunately recent changes to the store make it much less pleasant to shop. Being forced to wait in line and check out two different times depending on what aisle I got an item from is ridiculous. I’ve stopped purchasing most things I used to get at this store because of how inconvenient they’ve made it. Not to mention items in the produce section (e.g. mixed greens, dips, salad dressings are frequently expired but still being sold) - looking at you garlic hummus that expired Sept 9th but was in the store 2 days ago. As mentioned, I want to love this store but they have made it so inconvenient to shop there that I’ve started going elsewhere for most of my grocery needs. Two stars because staff has always been friendly and it’s not their fault.
It's a grocery store..
This Safeway closes an hour earlier than the others, is often full of transients, and they moved all the pharmacy area items into a self enclosed space with its own cashier checkout that you're forced to use.
And the shopping carts randomly magnetically lock up on paying customers as they leave the store.
I bought Nashville hot chicken tender from the buffet counter on 08/23 which was just put in a small paper bag instead of a plastic bowl with a cover. I went home by UBER and had the large paper bag with other items on my lab. When I arrived at home, everything was soaked from the fat sauce. I just realized it when I took it out to eat the chicken. During this time, my dress, the counter, the table, everything was full of the fat sauce where the bag was. I walked in to Safeway on 08/27 around 5.20pm and talked to the manager about it, showed her the pictures. The lady told me it is how they have to pack such items and apologized.
I had expected a bit more for this mess and destroying my nice Desigual dress just from a bit of chicken.
Maybe they will do better for clients to pack such food properly.

my cousin and I bought one $5 bottle of laundry detergent and the cashier in the home checkout line threw our receipt in the trash, so we walked to the door and the police stopped us and accused us of stealing and said we had to go back and get a receipt if we had actually paid. We went back and waited while the cashier dug through his trash can but couldn’t find it. He had to go tell the police we did pay the $5 and were allowed to leave. I tried to talk to the manager politely and she yelled at me and said it was my fault and to expect that treatment always if I shop there, it’s walking distance from my house and I drive further to king soopers
I avoid coming to this location because of their inconvenient security measures. This is the closest grocery store to me and I drive further to avoid it unless I need something fast. The cosmetic separate checkout makes me never buy any of those products from them. It's just not worth it when I can go elsewhere and quickly buy the products I need and move on.
This is one of the grocery stores that is starting to treat its customers like criminals and make it less convenient to pay for your items. They now ask that self checkout be 15 items or less, and have cordoned all the personal care items into a separate section with its own checkout cashier. (These restrictions can at least be largely ignored, for now.)
Everyone around here is afraid of homeless people stealing, I don’t know, loofas?, and using them to do meth? How exactly these measures are meant to prevent someone from just walking out without paying, I cannot say. But they do make things more annoying for their paying customers.
Nice safeway. Big selection of everything. Was clean. But the best thing was the woman from security who asked a man about his business. Safety first.
These are the most repugnant employees Safeway suffers; 20th st would fully end them.
There is always an excuse to avoid opening the bathroom:
"we are about to close them (3 hrs before close and 1 hr before scheduled close)"
"We are just about to clean them (with no cleaning materials around)"
"The person with the keys is on break (said person returns), 'no i don't have keys'"
"We just uh... (trails off), You can walk around the corner to Subway and use code {wrong code}" -- also not remotely true
I went from cancelling instacart orders there to actively steering business elsewhere.
Go to Corona, DU, Krameria, or the aforementioned unSafeway on 20th instead.

***EDIT - lol Safeway responds 'we are sorry that was your experience' no you're not you designed that to be the new experience. You are letting us know you don't trust your customers. Also there IS NO 'contact us' page. Quit copy and pasting the same rote response everywhere***
Just got back from what will be my last trip to this location. I hadn't been in a while and today I went to pick up a few things and wow it's changed for the worse. I went through and tried to do my shopping as usual even though I noticed a lot of things I needed were in a cramped too small space and very disorganized from the layout of a normal store with too many unrelated items jumbled together. Then I tried to leave that 'section' with mini aisles and was told "You'll have to pay for those items separately here" I said I wasn't done shopping and the clerk said "We've had too many walkouts so now you have to pay separately."
So any hygiene item: lotion, body wash, wipes, dental floss, cleaning produtcs, cleanser, detergent, spray, baby products are now trapped behind an enclosed maximum security prison section complete with cameras and screens. And you have to pay TWICE to get out of the store if you want anything else or wait in a really long inefficient line that takes waaaaay too long and everyone crowds the middle of the store.
Then they bag it all up in a bunch of paper bags with NO HANDLES so you can have the experience of bringing up 1 bag at a time instead of 4 like I used to be able to. I hope King Soopers buys out this location soon, it is AWFUL
I’ve been going to this Safeway for a little over a year and have been noticing for the past few months that some of the deals that they offer are not being acknowledged at the cashier. Just today I bought peaches, they were supposed to be 1.97 LB but the cashier rung it up as 3.33 LB. That’s a big difference! Five peaches came out to about $9! I definitely didn’t want to pay that much for peaches. And this is not the first time. Last week it was the salad kits. Every week there’ll be at least one item that hasn’t been properly discounted to reflect their weekly deals. I think it’s time I drive further and go to King Soopers. It’s a shame cause I only live 3 blocks away, but my bank is taking a hit paying for deals that aren’t valid. Plus I don’t have the energy to confront them every time, grocery shopping is already mind numbing as it is and I have to at the end of it argue for a few dollars? Nope that’s ok.
this is the best Safeway in all of town don’t be fooled, especially if you’ve got Joseph to help you out. He’s an incredible person. He help me find everything I needed and then tone was checking me out and he was so kind and knew exactly how to help me out and really this Safeway is just the only Safeway I can go to in Denver that’s on.
This store is in total disarray and they chose to separate the store to where you need to check out separately in a single long line with any hygiene items (items as cheap as $1). I am fully capable of checking out with a bottle of bleach, lol. This Safeway treats its customers like criminals by passing along its corporate greed and lack of actual employees with insanely pointless “security” measures. Every time I come here I sincerely regret it.
Rhonda in the seafood department was great. I wanted an entire fillet and she prepared and packaged it like a pro. Was courteous and knowledgeable, even went around the counter to hand me the seafood because my back was turned to them.
Great experience.
