Food was great, and very cool to be in such a historic building! The portions are pretty small (except for the burger) so be prepared if you're going with folks who have bigger appetites. Food plating is lovely and flavors are unique and truly very, very good. Cocktails and wine were also great. Service was kind of slow, from taking our orders to food arriving. We got there at 5:15pm and wanted to leave by 6:45 so we could get to our show at DCPA... but we were pretty rushed...
We had a reservation. We were seated at the first table. The area was freezing because every time the front door opened very cold air came in. We asked for a different table and were told there was none. Yet two other couples came in soon after without reservations and were seated further in the back.
We shared the lamb beggars purse as an appetizer - excellent, followed by delicious sea bass on potato risotto and a strip steak. The potato risotto was a new one for me, and absolutely delicious; the strip steak was done to a perfect medium rare. The smoked old fashion was an excellent cocktail, and the service was terrific. The Nickel is an excellent option for a pre-concert meal when attending Boettcher Hall. I would certainly return.
