Closed for an indefinite time. We visited last week and saw the sign on the door. As I later read in the local paper, this restaurant is next door to our historic steam excursion train station, but the train is not using that depot during the pandemic. This restraint enjoyed much business from people departing the train, and found itself unable to survive financially without that business. We will miss it.
Earlier in this review page appears my one star review from our visit on July 19, 2019. This rating was so low because when we visited the restaurant it was pretty vacant, and we were told we could not be seated due to lack of staff, even though most tables were vacant. Yesterday, we decided to give this restaurant another try. This time, it was far more full with customers than the time before. Nonetheless, we were seated quickly, and were even given a choice of the dining room or the bar room. We were attended to quickly, especially in light of how full it was. Service was prompt and the food was great. I tried the Ham and apple panini, which is actually a toasted sandwich, and it was outstanding. My conclusion is that the problem on our visit last July was a fluke due to some temporary staffing problems not representative of the usual quality of this restaurant, which appears to be very high now.
Great location in downtown Durango and adjacent to the Durango-Silverton railroad. Restaurant has been here for many years and has a lot of history. We were warmly greeted and seated promptly. Good variety of menu options. We had the Tavern sirloin and the Tavern trout and both were excellent. We topped off the meal with a slice of Key Lime pie, which was also very good. Kimber, our server, was very personable and checked on us regularly. Very good experience.
Always great food and service.
I'm 55 & went to The Palace restaurant as a child, in Durango, 1hour from where I live. They started out in a tiny place with their specialty, chicken and dumplings,& all good was wheeled out on a card & served family style. It was such a treat back then,& still is today, altho' it's now a much larger restaurant...& they still make the EXACT same wonderful chicken & funplings they made when I wAs child! ALL their food is excellent, & I've tried a wide variety! It sits right by the infamous train station & in good weather you can eat in a lovely outside patio & watch & relax! You'll NEVER be disappointed there! Speaking from 45 approx. years of experience. My husband & I, when in Durango, always go there to eat their STILL famous chicken & dumplings! Another "oldie but goodie" MUST-go to in Durango!
The food is always good and staff seems to be doing their best. I also enjoy the seasonal and daily specials. Excellent servers Lisa and Kimber during the day.
Delicious food. Not too pricey. Hidden away near the train depot. The service was great. The diningroom was beautiful. Would love to go again.
My family and I ate here after we got back to town from the train ride. We didn’t have reservations but the staff got us seated quickly. The food here is great. Huge portions, home cooked food, best penne pasta I’ve ever had. Excellent service and the manager was awesome too. I highly recommend eating here.
I was surprised that a soup and salad lunch can be had here for $5. I had the larger size for $8 and it was very substantial. Excellent butternut squash soup. And one of us had a $16 lunch that could not be eaten at one sitting. The second half made a great dinner. Wonderful service and views of folks boarding the train. I had a Christmas dinner here many years ago and am delighted to learn it's a great lunch spot too.
Stopped here while on a bus tour. We had immediate service, and our food arrived very quickly! It was really delicious! They were friendly and prompt in every way. It is located by the Durango-Silverton train depot, and was a great find! I would definitely recommend this place! It was truly excellent!

Oct 4 was just perfect to view the leaves. We rode the train round trip and stopped in Silverton for lunch and shopping. The views from the train were unique each way. The views were magnificent. We had a lovely dinner at the Palace which is just across from the Depot. The service was great and the food delicious. The desserts were fabulous - key lime pie and cream brûlée. Yum
Nice staff
Black and white tile floor, antique furniture and nice bar menu
