I loved everything about the Strater Hotel. There is so much history within the hotel walls, if only the walls could talk. Our room was spacious, comfortable and beautiful. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Both the restaurant and bar had a good menu choice. Located on beautiful Main Street, just steps away from lots of great shops and restaurants. I would definitely stay there again when in the Durango area.

Got charged extra fees which was told to us wrong upon making the reservation. They wouldn't fix it or they did not know who made the mistake. No accountability of their staff and obviously no communication. They just lost a customer.

This hotel feels like a great piece of history & has lots to explore. The rooms are all named after historical figures that were part of the town. It feels very 'old Western' & the saloon is a great place to listen to live music (every night), plus the food is hearty. Staff were really friendly & helpful.

Very much enjoyed our short stay at the Strater Hotel which is located in the historic centre of Durango. The hotel has a lot of character making it a very interesting place to stay. The room was comfortable and the decor and furniture in keeping with hotel style. Dined in the evening in the saloon where the food was good and live entertainment added to the atmosphere. No breakfast option was available at the hotel but the Lone Spur cafe a few doors down was a good option. The hotel provides passes for it's adjacent parking lots and we were able to leave the car there the following day when we were away on the winter steam train trip (very highly recommended and station only a few minutes walk from the hotel). Would definitely recommend the Strater when in Durango.

Great hotel with loads of history and charm! The rooms are a bit small but it helps greatly having a closet large enough to store our 2 suitcases and several duffle bags and back packs. Opened up the floor space. Plenty of hot water! Restaurants on site but no breakfast options at the hotel. Albertsons Groceries are walking distance and if you go, don’t miss the amazing small Raman restaurant in the parking lot. A real treat! The hotel is walking distance to the train station for the Durango to Silverton Narrow Gauge Railway! Only a couple of blocks. So…..yes, you will hear trains every morning. We enjoyed hearing and watching the train pass by. Restaurants are within walking distance-our favorites were Lone Spur Cafe & Grassland Burgers & the Raman restaurant at Albertsons Grocery Store.

Hotel was great with historic atmosphere, and the staff was helpful. Great location and easy to walk around town. The rooms were small but clean, you would expect this in a historic hotel. Carlos the night shift manager was very helpful and nice. The only thing I would change would be to have coffee in the room. Would strongly recommend staying here.

We've had the good fortune to travel extensively and time and time again we comment on nothing beats the Strater. Why? The building, the people, the food, the music, the town....they all combine to make the Strater and excellent place to stay. The staff is so super friendly it almost seems surreal. Congratulations Strater....we will be back again.

My wife and I were on a driving trip through Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico with a two night stop in Durango. Staying here was on of the highlights of the trip. The historic hotel is in a great location to explore the town. We booked online. When we arrived we were checked in very quickly and professionally. Our room, although tight has a very comfortable bed and nice sized bathroom. Both were spotless. I'm looking forward to our next stay at the Stratler.

I love staying in historic hotels when I can and am happy that I got to stay at the Strater. Great atmosphere, beautiful restaurant, and a very cool saloon. My room was nicely furnished and the bed was comfy. Was reading in my room and heard the steam engine whistle sound as the Durango & Silverton went buy. That was really special.
The hotel is in a great location. We had seen the hotel in a previous visit and decided to give it a go. We weren’t disappointed! Our room King room was spacious and the bathroom adequate. The lobby, hallways and our room were clean. We were on the second floor and found the small elevator charming. Enjoyed supper in the western theme saloon where a band was playing. A delightful experience in a historic hotel. Only negative- Did feel it the price of the room to be inflated.

the strater hotel in durango is right on the main street almost center of town. We ( 4 adults) decided to stay here for several reasons. first , we wanted to be close to the train for our next day adventure. second, we wanted an authentic historic hotel experience, and this place delivered that and then some. third, there were alot of good reviews here on trip advisor with helpful and useful information that we were interested in. We learned from prior reviews here , that parking was limited so when we pulled up, we parked right out front and unloaded our luggage. after checking in we got a parking pass to use the lot behind the hotel and used that. That is where the car sat for the next two days as everything we wanted to do and see was just a short walk away from the hotel. Including restaurants, shops, the train, and more. The hotel itself i could have not been happier with. I loved our room #108 right on the first floor just past the reception area. We had a false front door looking like an old time shop, that was sooooo cool . our double queen room was very spacious with a full bath, closet space and sofa w/chairs and table. We opted to spend a little more money to get one of the hotels better rooms that did not have any of issues that other posters were saying negative things about. the room was super clean, beds were comfy, got a good night sleep each night we were here. the extended areas of the hotel were a joy to explore. walking the hallways seeing the names of the famous people on some of the doors. the sitting rooms with the stained glass, antique furniture, and the decorative lighting. The upscale restaurant was nice to see and look at but we did not eat there. The diamond lills bar/grill has that old west saloon look to it. it was very crowded when we were there, so we ordered a couple of appetizers to go and had them in our room. ( was above average but not great) I was able to get some good pictures in the morning when no one was there. The hotel has a small elevator, enough for 2 regular size people or one person and a large suitcase. the ice machine is on the first floor just down the hallway. The hot tub is past the ice maker on the left and down just o few stairs on the left. ( you will need to make an appointment to reserve time for you to use it) there is no charge its just a covid thing. Simply put dont miss out on this experience, the hot tub is no ordinary chain style tub. its very nice up to 4 people, has a private bath you can change in , and best of all because of the reservation, you have it all to yourself. The staff was wonderful everywhere and everyday we were there. Always greeted us with a smile and asked how we were doing and if they could help with anything. On our last day , the front desk lady (forget her name) was so kind to offer us a tour of the ballroom and pointed out some of the hotels hidden gems. (what a wonderful treat) i never knew president kennedy was here. On our 6 day vacation in colorado , this was our favorite hotel of them all. five stars all the way. great job to all of you........

The Strater Hotel is a lot of fun! It’s like a trip back in time. Lobby and rooms feel authentic, with a beautiful collection of Americana furniture. A few areas to seek improvement: staff at desk was young, eager but not really knowledgeable about surrounding area. Could not get help planning our trip to Mesa Verde (the area’s main attraction) but planned it out with Google Maps. As internet often doesn’t work in the mountains, you definitely need to know where you are going before leaving reception. The waitresses in the Diamond Belle were downright rude the night we tried to have dessert there and listen to the band. After one of them glared at me often when I sat in the balcony because no tables were available on the main floor, we left. On the other hand, the waitresses in The Office were beyond delightful, particularly the young red-headed waitress. She went out of her way to make us comfortable and find us some tea (in what is essentially a saloon with music) on a packed evening. The music was great and the ambiance was perfect- exactly what you want for an historic hotel in the old west. We went back a second night.

Overall this was an interesting place to stay, better than a typical chain hotel because it had character. The classic King room was plenty big, and they actually had daily housekeeping, which I've come to NOT expect on my travels. The Office lounge had good cocktails and a fun singer. The location is perfect for visiting all of the beautiful surrounding areas. The biggest negative is the size of the bathroom. I know it's a historic property, but the shower was built for a 40 pound, 5 foot person. A six foot man was a very tight squeeze. There wasn't any room in the bathroom to dry off without soaking the entire floor, no storage space or hooks, and a very tiny sink. Getting ready was a challenge. I think the price is a bit inflated considering this feature of the room.

Excellent place to stay, historic thru and thru, quiet rooms and the food in all 3 venues was amazing. I had the Elk Tenderloin for dinner, my Wife had Filet, average prices and great service. The location is walk-able to anywhere in downtown Durango.
