Mama Rees in Grand Junction calls itself a “country dance bar,” but it’s really just whatever music the owner feels like playing. People come to learn new dances, do the ones they know, and enjoy a mix of line and swing — but the playlist barely changes, so that’s impossible.
Not all great dance songs are strictly country, and that’s okay — successful bars know it’s about the dancing, not just the genre. But here, the owner would rather have an empty floor than let people dance to something he doesn’t approve of… yet will randomly throw on EDM halfway through the night.
If you’re going to advertise as a country dance bar, play for the crowd you’re targeting. Take notes from the thriving bars on the Front Range and in Utah. Right now, overpriced drinks, mismatched vibes, and a playlist built around one person’s taste are driving away the very people they claim to want.

I went to go for my birthday (07/11) and my boss was buying lunch for the whole office. My coworker went to place orders at 7th St location and wasn’t open at 11:30 like posted. So she drove to Orchard Mesa to try again - this had to be around 11:45 and the kid working there basically told my coworker nothing was ready yet. Owner was out of town on vacation or something, but to be so excited to get BBQ that reminded me of home for my bday unfortunately didn’t happen. I’ll try again sometime, but Dickie’s won my service over for a little while.

The staff was nice but the food was horrible. Fatty and no seasonings. Tastes like it came out of a bag. Worst beans if ever had.

I came into town from Colorado Springs for the weekend a week ago and I’m an avid line dancer at my bar over there. I had a fantastic time at first. No cover fee, and bunch of line dances, everyone was having a blast. Then a bunch of people came in dressed up like they came from an event, were very obviously drunk, and then were on stage BLASTING EDM music. COMPLETELY ruined my night and one of the guests there informed me that it was the owner on stage. As a COUNTRY BAR, this should be unacceptable and is no way to run a business. Don’t advertise that you’re a country bar and then play EDM music. I get that not everyone loves line dancing, my local bar does one swing dance and one line dance and then repeat throughout the entire night and everyone has a good time. But if you’re going to advertise country swing and line dancing, follow through. I wouldn’t have gone if I knew there was going to be EDM especially from the owner. It was a great time before the drunk group showed up and ruined everyone’s night. Apparently it’s just a place for the owner to get drunk and party with his friends than a genuine business.

If you want to underage drink this is the place to go! My 17 year old daughter came home super drunk with her friends and said she was here. Of course I can’t always control my teenager but a bar can. No wrist bands or stamps to prove she’s of age to order at the bar. Very disappointed in this place that allows 5 teenagers to drink without any repercussions.

Very disappointed. Myself and a group of friends went for dinner. However when we showed up they basically didn't have any. They ran out of all but one of their primary dishes. And and sides were almost the same way. The service (what little there is) was disappointing as well, the gentleman at the bar was kinda rude and arrogant. Honestly it was better when it was a pizza joint but even that's pushing it.

It's a gay bar not a cowboy bar.

If you like eating at the Sam's Club food court, then this is the place for you. When we arrived there was no one at the reception station and we must of looked confused because a nice gentleman walked up from the back and asked if we were here for pizza. We said no and that we wanted to try the new BBQ menu. He led us to the back where we placed our order and were told they were almost out of baked beans. We all ordered brisket and while the brisket was very good and the potato salad was ok, the coleslaw was bland and the mac and cheese was watery and mushy with no flavor. It seems like the sides are bought at Sam's Club and are just awful. They ruin the delicious meat. Homemade sides would elevate the meat and make it worth eating here, but as is, I will not be back.

The inside of the restaurant is basically like being in a warehouse. There is a dance floor and a bar along with a stage and an electric bull. It seems like they are making the money with the night time honky tonk. If this is the case, I think they should stick with that and give up on the BBQ and just serve bar food like wings and nachos.

The employees seem nice, but the environment and food need work if they want the restaurant to succeed.

We came in early on a Thursday at around 5:30 pm. We had to ASK how to get food. The young woman behind the bar was not friendly to us two older folks. The food was not much better than okay. So, to summarize: meh food; bad service; lousy environment. Don't waste your time or money.

I don’t know if the ownership changed, but they used to make pizza. Now they pretend to be line-dancing cowboys who apparently don’t eat pizza.

If you wanna break out that duster and go cosplay cowboy this place might be for you. It’s safe to say I won’t be back.

Highly disappointed. As someone who goes to college in Texas and has actually been to a honkytonk with line dancing this is nothing like that. If you want a real country bar your SOL. Also 10$ for one drink is INSANE. Most places charge 5-7$ for a college/Thursday night. Bartender/dj wasn’t nice.

I called in to do a delivery order and was informed that they’ve transitioned from a pizza restaurant to a “country music barbecue restaurant”. Pfffffft. As if Junction needs another generic barbecue restaurant

Visited this establishment on Spring ball weekend from Texas. Was asked to move to a table because they were going to start getting busy at the bar on a Saturday night. Prior to this request, we were passed several times at the bar by bartenders with empty cups before asking if we would like another beer. You're worried about being busy when you can't keep up with bartop guests? We drink beer in Texas. Learn to keep up with your guests in front of you before walk up guests. Won't be back.

PS...Colorado BBQ sucks. Go back to serving pizza. Understand that Nashville county is not the only country.
