Was promptly and warmly greeted when I came in. Great selection of foods, both traditional bakery treats like muffins and donuts, but also breakfast options like egg sandwiches and quiche. I enjoyed all that I ordered, including the not so veggie quiche.

Any place that reminds me of my grandmother or great aunts is a winner! It is hard to find bakeries that aren't filled with overly crazy sweet items topped with just too much stuff, you definitely won't find that here. Old school baking, there is honeslty nothingness better. Both my husband & I grew up with this type of baking in WI, and we have missed it so much. We have tried quite a few items from here, and all have been delicious from the raspberry cream cheese Croissants, pumpkin bars & the delicious pies (fresh if you wake up early)! The cherry pie is my favorite so far. I got a little teary eyed when I read the sign saying it might remind you of Grandma, because I really hoped it did. Thankfully they didn't judge me at this random burst of emotion. It did indeed remind me of my Grandma, heart warming for sure. We will be here as often as we can afford fresh baked goods, because they are that good!

They're open early and the muffins, quiche and brownies are excellent.

Im sure its good and they are normally nice but not today. If you are disabled and need a service dog, don't bother. My disabled husband had his dog with him. Even though it's not necessary, she (his dog) was fully vested and labeled. The girl behind the counter asked my husband to tie his dog up outside he explained he couldn't as she was working. She then argued that it is not allowed there because the health department gets weird about it (not true and actually illegal). He shamefully went and sat outside with his dog. Would they have said the same to a blind patron with a dog? What if my husband was alone and had no one to purchase his breakfast for him? I wanted to tell her I am in the industry and also a National Restaurant Association certified food safety trainer and explain ADA regulations to her. We were still going to grab some cash and buy the goods but my husband was vert upset. Instead, my daughter and I just left to support my husband.

Sugar and Spice has been a delightful part of our trip. The baked goods are made fresh with real ingredients. We've stopped in twice for treats and the nice selection of jams, etc. The owner, Miss Naomi, is lovely and is a great ambassador for Westcliffe.

One of the best things about going to the Westcliffe valley amongst many, is stopping by Sugar and Spice and enjoying any of their baked goods. For me the cinnamon buns and blueberry muffins can't be beat. They also make a great cup of coffee and to sit outside in nice weather having one of the goodies just purchased makes the visit perfect. Now if they could capture the aroma of their bakery in an aerosol can one can take home.

Cash only, which limited how much we could get … the cinnamon roll had delicious frosting but very little cinnamon, the strawberry cream cheese croissant was delightful and bright home some peach jam. Nice stop for treats in a small town.

There is a unique phenomenon that occurs in small towns such as Westcliffe. It is what I will call the "scarcity phenomenon". I have experienced the same in many towns all over the country.Because many small towns have a lack of choice, those businesses that are able to make it often are hailed as true standouts. However, I'm a firm believer that many small-town 5 star establishments would be 4 or 3 star establishments in comparison to their many neighbors should they be located elsewhere. There's obviously a certain level of mercy to be granted to small town establishments, and it is worth remembering that the scarcity argument goes both ways. You are totally thankful to find a decent cup of coffee or slice of pizza in a small town.*TO MY ABOVE POINT, WE'RE GRATEFUL FOR EVERY SMALL BUSINESS THAT MOVES INTO THIS TOWN AND WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THEM*That being said, I do feel that there are valid criticisms of even the beloved gems from time-to-time.While Sugar & Spice scores HIGH on the quaint factor, the location, and generally, the homemade factor, it lacks elsewhere. For instance, their cinnamon rolls are praised as exceptional. I do find the rolls to have a very nice dough and they're a generous portion. However, that's mainly what they are. . . large and bread-y. Probably 80% plain bread. The vast majority of my bites were nothing but plain bread. They're also lacking in the cinnamon factor and the icing tastes like nothing but powdered sugar.Again, this will all come off as harsh because it's Westcliffe, but I wouldn't go for their cinnamon rolls if they were next door to a number of other establishments in a larger city.Another example of this idea is with their sausage biscuits. I'm not sure they were homemade in the first place, but when microwaved and packaged the way they are, you can't help but be reminded of Jimmy Dean a bit. After examining them, they appear uniform and indistinguishable from what I would buy in the frozen section at Lowe's. I would love to find they're homemade, but you'd think there'd be more variability from sandwich to sandwich. . . but they look like clones.Again, take this all with a grain of salt. Sugar & Spice is a wonderful place with wonderful people. I wish them well and of course I will be back hoping to have my mind changed in the future! Stopping here is at the top of our list when we have guests in town.
