My family swooned when I offered to go to Merritt Canteen for Bacon Egg and Cheese sandwiches on fresh, warm Portugese rolls with their SPICY chili. I cannot eat this sandwich without making the Mmmm sound, I don't even realize that I'm doing it. I also ordered a container of the chili to bring back home, ate breakfast like a happy king for a week.

Hubby got a chilli cheese dog and curly fries, and I got the lobster roll. Lobster roll was ok. Chilli cheese dog was pretty good. Curly fries are curly fries. Overall, pretty good. Prices are decent.

There are restaurants, and then there are institutions. Merritt Canteen is the latter — a Bridgeport landmark that’s been feeding this city’s soul since 1942. Walk through the door and you’re not just ordering food, you’re stepping into decades of grit, flavor, and history.
