It's a solid sushi place and other Japanese favorites. The biggest minus is that it's definitely overpriced for the fare. All in all, most of the dishes were good to very good. I would say this place is scene over food.
The food is fine...but watch your wallet. Their credit card machine starts at 20% up to 30%. Really? 30% They're trying to embarrass/scam you into paying more than one should. What they dont tell you is that they're calculating the tip including tax. So you're overpaying on every transaction even if you were being generous. Its not nice that your last interaction with the restaurant before you walk out the door is being scammed.
We had the most incredible first experience at Hinoki! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was stunning—vibrant yet elegant. The food was absolutely delicious; every dish was beyond our expectations. What truly made our night extra special was our server JAIRON He was so patient, attentive, and professional. He guided us through the menu with so much care, and made sure we were comfortable the entire time. We truly felt so well taken care of. Thank you for making our first visit unforgettable. We’ll definitely be back!
Rude blonde hostess looked at me like I had 4 eyes when I walked in, immediately started my experience on the wrong foot. Great food, very polite server, just the snotty girls in the front 🤷🏽♀️
Geisha roll was $19 at lunch so I came back for it… why is it $27 now?? Same exact roll. Nothing changed except the time of day lol. Not a huge deal but like… that’s messed up. Just feels sneaky tbh. 8pcs too smh!
One of the best sushi restaurants!
Would definitely come again. Food was great. Specially the sushi and sashimi. The reason for the 4 stars was due to wine glass having a marker line.
Five stars for Hinoki!
We went for lunch and were so impressed with both the quality and variety. The lunch specials are a standout—offering everything from fresh sushi and sashimi to rolls, bentos, and delicious cooked options. I ordered the lunch sushi and every piece was melt-in-your-mouth fresh. You can really taste the quality. The ambiance was welcoming, and the service was prompt and kind. I’ll definitely be back—especially once they open their Darien location, which will be even closer to home. Can’t wait!
My family and I visited Hinoki tonight for a quick, intimate dinner to celebrate the upcoming holiday. We arrived at 9:00 PM, fully aware that the restaurant closes at 10:00 PM. While we weren't planning to stay long, we were disappointed by the lack of warmth and hospitality we received. From the moment we walked in, the two hostesses were cold and unwelcoming, and within 10 minutes, we were reminded multiple times—by several different employees—that the kitchen closes at 9:30. While we understand the need for transparency, the constant reminders felt uncomfortable and rushed rather than considerate.
We decided to stay because our kids enjoy the food, but unfortunately, the service did not improve. Our waiter arrived at our table visibly anxious, made no eye contact, and immediately informed us that we needed to order right away. This lack of courtesy and warmth made the experience feel more like a transaction than a meal.
The food itself was decent, but it didn’t make up for the overall experience. It was clear that customer service was not a priority that evening. Dining out as a family, especially on a Tuesday, is a rare treat for us, and we were hoping for a relaxing, enjoyable experience. Sadly, it felt rushed, impersonal, and far from the intimate moment we had hoped for.
Excellent sushi and great service. Fresh fish, high quality, and a great selection of rolls.

My girlfriend and I came for a date night on a wednesday, we were greeted by the hostess and she let us see both dining rooms and choose where we'd prefer to sit. (great start) We were swiftly greeted by Jose (The manager, i think?) and offered water, and within a minute, Veronica (our server) introduced herself and helped us choose drinks and navigate the menus. Overall, the food was amazing, Veronica was very knowledgeable about the menu and answered any questions we had, also, as all 3 of us are similar in age, the vibe she had fit perfect for us and the dining experience we wanted to have. We don't like robotic servers, although they are great and get the job done pretty flawlessly, we like personality and connecting with our servers. So, overall a 10/10 experience. The food speaks for itself, everything was delicious and we would be back just for that, but what really makes places special nowadays is the service you're provided. For context, I work as a server in a high-volume high-end restaurant so my standards are realistic and accurate. I know how busy and stressful things get. Kudos to the FOH staff, kitchen, bartenders, and especially Veronica for providing an amazing date night. Can't wait to be back!
Side note: If you wanted some recommendations,
Rock Shrimp tempura 11/10 (we asked for some of the rock sauce to take home because it was out of this world)
Corn ribs: 10/10; an asian take on eloté, the corn was superbly cooked and flavor was exactly where you wanted it to be. Creamy, warm, cheesy, im craving it as im typing this.
Beef tartar croquette: 7/10. beef was phenomenal, but a little too much croquette for me.
Miso soup: 10/10 cant go wrong with a well made soup, great starter or palate cleanser
Passion roll: 8/10 it wasnt the particular roll i wanted to try, its what the missus wanted and she loved it, I just felt like there were more interesting options on the menu. Regardless, it was well made, rice was well seasoned, fish tasted fresh and the thai sauce wasnt too spicy, which is good for the missus, although i wish it was spicier :)
California Uni a la carte, N/A rating. It was our first time trying Uni, so I have nothing to compare it to. Uni is an acquired taste and sadly, it wasnt for us.
Will be back to try more things that piqued our interest 👀

The noise level was oppressive. Our waiter was obviously new and was replaced mid meal. Our $19 martini was too sweet but the sushi was excellent. ... as good as anywhere. The miso cod was overdone and unimpressive. Normally I would be inclined to share a dessert and enjoy coffee but I was happy to ask for the bill and leave. Of course the portable credit card device gave me a choice of a tip of 20%, 25% etc. or no tip. There wasn't an option of a "custom" tip that I saw. The restaurant was packed on a Friday night so they must be doing something right. I will not be returning.
Parking: Public lot 2 blocks away. Was packed. I found the last spot at 7pm

I celebrated my birthday at Hinoki, and Veronica made the night amazing! From the moment we sat down, she was super friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. She gave us great food and drink suggestions, and everything came out perfectly timed. The restaurant itself is really nice, but Veronica’s service made it even better.
