I want to like this place but there were mostly cons than pros. Our waitress was great but then we ended up with another waitress who was great too. However, it made hard to look at the menus on the wall since they don’t give you any. The food is poorly presented. We ordered two grilled chicken sandwiches, a cheeseburger, two orders of coleslaw, and three orders of fries. It all came on separate plates and not all at the same time. The buns were thick and not even toasted. The vanilla milkshake was good.
The ketchup/mustard packets were difficult to open. What really grossed me out was the staff preparing the food weren’t wearing gloves.

I live in town with my boyfriend, and today we decided to go to this restaurant because we’ve always enjoyed the food. We even brought two of our friends along to show them the place. It’s important to note that my boyfriend and our two friends are black.
As soon as we walked in, we were met with a very rude attitude from a male worker, probably in his early to mid-20s. Since we’ve been there before, we know what the service is usually like, but this time it was completely different. The restaurant was half empty with plenty of tables available, he asked hesitantly and with an attitude “uhh can i help you”. When I asked for a table for four, he rudely responded with, “Let me check.” When he returned, he told us to sit in the back corner and walked away without even pointing out the table or a second glance.
Thankfully, our waitress was very kind and seemed to make up for his behavior. But when it was time for out food to come the same male worker brought our food, he practically slammed the plates down and walked away. Throughout the interaction, he only spoke to me (I’m white) and never acknowledged my boyfriend nor my friends. We also noticed that he treated every other group that came in with much more kindness and respect than he showed us.
This experience was extremely disappointing. We’ve always loved coming here, especially growing up in Manchester, but it was disheartening to be treated so poorly and unwelcomingly because of skin color. Sadly, we can no longer support this restaurant in good conscience.

Shady Glen Restaurant and Ice Cream Parlor is an experience of nostalgia from a simpler time. This 50s-style diner transports you back to a post WW2 era where the ice cream flowed in gallon containers and servers wore paper hats. Simply for the experience, Shady Glen is worth a visit.

The food, is just okay. I ordered a Cheeseburger Platter with Fries and Cole Slaw, Child's Grilled Cheese, Root Beer, Peanut Butter Chocolate Milkshake, Chocolate Malt Milkshake, Hot Fudge Sundae with Cookies & Cream, Small Chocolate Ice Cream, and Regular Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Ice Cream. The cheeseburger is unique, especially with the crisped melted cheese, but it's very dry and lacks flavor outside of the crispy cheese. The root beer is unique to Shady Glen, and I liked it. More like a sasparilla. The cole slaw was the best dinner item I ate here. The ice cream is good. I wouldn't recommend getting it as a milkshake. Stick to a sundae or regular scoops.

Our server was a pleasant young man. Serving isn't his life's passion, and we couldn't track him down for refills. Our plates also started to heap at the end of the table as we ordered dessert. There was nothing bad or good about the service, it just was.

Again, for the experience of an old time diner, it's worth the visit, but I probably won't dine here again.

People still talk to each other here.

I appreciate places like this because they are a treasure compared to America Land. Where everything is the same and corporatized.

I hate coleslaw. I did not hate this coleslaw.

Very disappointing! Food is nowhere like it used to be. The burgers are no longer juicy, the fries and onion ring are greasy, the buns are way too thick and extremely dry. The cooks don’t wear gloves, the fry and onion ring guy doesn’t let any oil drip off before plating them, any he drops on the counter while filling the platters or bowls he just picks up with his bare hands and tosses them back on the platter or in the bowl.

I asked the waitress how long they’ve had the new buns and she said about a month and the reviews haven’t been favorable.

Food all over the floor where the cooks are; dirty, dusty air vents, dirty wood trim. Seems like this place has gone way downhill and owners just don’t care.

I have mostly been to the one in Manchester Parkade, and that one was consistently good. Since it’s closed, I’ve gone to the original one, which I’ve never thought was as good. I think they closed the wrong one.

When my husband and I walked up, I commented I was surprised the parking lot wasn’t full and we didn’t have to wait. I now know why. It’s SO sad to see such an icon that has been around for so many years deteriorate so badly. I hope the owners will read reviews like this and bring it back to what it has been for so many years.
