I've been meaning to check this place out for a while now and I finally went. I've been to a few Ethiopian restaurants around the world and this one did not disappoint. The food tasted amazing! A must try dish is the Key Sega Wot! Talk about flavor!!! It was loaded with flavor and out of this world. I already can't wait to go back and get more. It's a small little restaurant located right on Main Street in Middletown. If it wasn't a rainy night tonight, I would have loved sitting outside on their outdoor patio. They currently don't serve alcohol, but there was a sign outside stating that they were in the process of getting a liquor license. So, Ethiopian beer and honey wine is on its way! It's really hard to describe what Ethiopian cuisine is like if you've never had it before. Not a curry and cumin like Indian. Not a tomatoey basil and oregano like Italian. Not even dilly like Polish. It's very unique. Earthy and tangy using unheard of spice combinations. Sides are usually lentils and different vegetables. Cabbage is the best in my opinion. Honestly, I can't even think of one cuisine to compare it to. All I can tell you is to try it. You'll probably love it!

Never had this cuisine before and was excited to try. The service was slow but it was one guy more or less running the show, so it was fine. The food was good. It was a combo of middle eastern and Indian. It was very flavorful, and well presented. The portions were ginormous. Recommend almost all of the apps, but can’t remember the main dish I got. It was a chicken very reminiscent of tandoori. Fun place highly recommend

What a gem this restaurant is!! We’ve been a few times and each visit is better than the last. The food is just out of this world - filling, comforting, and substantial portions. I crave that injera all the time now! We love the outdoor dining, too. The staff are always so friendly and accommodating.
Highly recommend trying the beet and potato salad appetizer. It’s our favorite!!!

We stopped for dinner on the way home from a very long weekend and sat outside on the patio with our 140 pound dog, The owner immediately greeted us and welcomed us. We started with a falafel salad that was delicious and im super picky as my family is middle eastern and spoiled me with falafel growing up. We then shared two chicken dishes that were fresh and flavorful and super healthy. I cant wait to go back when they get their liquor license to try some Ethopian wine which I hear is delicious.

My family and I visited Abyssinian Ethiopian Restaurant in Middletown, CT, looking for a unique experience, and it truly exceeded our expectations in every way from the quality of the food to the service and overall atmosphere. The food was exceptional and generously portioned, especially the Doro Wot and Awaze Tibs. The service was warm and attentive and the traditional coffee ceremony added a memorable cultural touch. The only thing missing was the traditional honey wine, which we had hoped to try. The restaurant is under new management and they mentioned they’re in the process of obtaining a liquor license. Highly recommend this place to anyone trying Ethiopian cuisine for the first time.

Tonight was our first time dining at Abyssinian—and our first experience with Ethiopian cuisine. It was incredible. The owner was wonderfully welcoming and took the time to show us the proper way to eat with injera. Every dish was full of flavor, and the baklava was the perfect sweet finish to the meal. We can’t wait to go back!

Get yourself some doro wot, you'll thank me later. The only problem I can see is the lack of liquor license, meaning no tej (honey wine), but I'm told they're working on it.
