šŸ—“ļøJuly 18, 2025- *WRITTEN REVIEW Big Al’s Reel Reviews EP.139 šŸ“ Mystic Pizza šŸ‘ŽšŸ¾ Downtown Mystic, CT They made a movie about it in ā€˜88. But today, I walked in as the food critic they’ve really been waiting on. šŸŽ¬šŸ• Right in the heart of downtown Mystic, this spot is legendary. It was packed inside, full of energy, and the decor was absolutely beautiful. The vibe? Movie-worthy. The crowd? Out in full force. I was greeted by a great staff—Sophia was my server and super polite. Max, the manager, came out and introduced himself. Later, Grayson—another team member and B.A.R.R.fan—came over and showed love. That part was dope. šŸ™ŒšŸ¾ But you know me… I’m not here to review the movie. I’m here to review the meal. šŸ½ļø Here’s what I ordered: 1. Bourbon Molasses Wings šŸ— – $15.00 The wings were dry, lacking flavor, and honestly? They felt cheap in quality—the kind you’d expect from a freezer bag, not a spot with a name this iconic. The bourbon molasses sauce didn’t bring the flavor I was hoping for, and while the blue cheese dressing on the side was fire… it couldn’t save the dish. āŒ Verdict: Thumbs Down šŸ‘ŽšŸ¾ 2. Small Plain Cheese Pizza šŸ• – $14.00 Overloaded with cheese, under-seasoned, and very little flavor. Looked like a basic pie, but didn’t deliver anything beyond the name. āŒ Verdict: Thumbs Down šŸ‘ŽšŸ¾ 3. Chicken Parm with Garlic Bread šŸ – $22.00 The portion size was huge, but the execution missed. The noodles were waterlogged and mushy—definitely not al dente. The chicken was drowning in cheese, and not in a good way. I was literally choking on the mozzarella. The garlic bread? Actually pretty good—but it couldn’t save the dish. āŒ Verdict: Thumbs Down šŸ‘ŽšŸ¾ šŸ—£ļø Final Thoughts: The service? Wonderful. The atmosphere? Beautiful. The food? Missed on all fronts. Now listen—I totally understand if folks feel connected to this place because of the movie. For some, it’s not about the flavor—it’s about the feeling. The memories. And if that’s what brings you joy when you walk into Mystic Pizza, I get it. I truly do. But I’m here to rate the food. And on that front… it just didn’t deliver. And let me say this for the record—for anyone out there saying, ā€œBig Al’s bad reviews hurt businessesā€ā€¦ let’s be real. Mystic Pizza isn’t going anywhere. It’s a nationally known tourist magnet. This review won’t stop the crowds from showing up. But I will always give it to you straight. This one’s a pass.šŸ‘ŽšŸ¾ ā˜šŸ¾ā¤ļø –Big Al Mayo Always keeping it real to reel. See you on the Rebound. PeaceāœŒšŸ¾out

The pizza here reminds me of what Pizza Hut’s pizza used to be like from the 90s. This is not a bad thing, it is still quite delicious and the taste certainly brings back some nostalgia!

Had their Italian grinder. Absolute garbage. They use tasteless government provolone cheese. Garbage bread that you’d buy at Stop and Shop and it came with only 2 meats… salami (which is fine) and boiled ham. (Wrong) I cannot believe that sandwich came out of a New England state. Embarrassing. You’re better off buying a Subway Italian….. seriously .

Since we were nearby in RI, I wanted to take a quick trip to Mystic. Mystic Connecticut is a quaint little seaside town rich with history. Mystic Pizza has a history of its own. We're here in off-season, which, if anything, doesn't make parking a hassle. But it is cooler in late November. There are two entrances, one fir pick up and the other for the dining area. The interior borrows heavily from the movie, including a monitor running the 1988 movie of the same name.

We arrived in time for an early lunch. We kept it simple, splitting a bowl of New England clam chowder and a small pepperoni and garlic pizza. I also chose a local brew, RoadsMary, to wash it down.

Everything came out in a reasonable time. The clam chowder was good, but on the peppery side. The pizza is thin crust style with a good overall flavor and a nice crunch of the crust. But a slice a heaven, maybe not.

Service was first rate. Our food and beverage choices were very good but nothing stellar. Still, it's worth a try. Enjoy.

We visited on 9/24 during our trip to Mystic. Juan was our server. He did a great job taking care of us! We ordered a small House Special Pizza. It was so delicious!! The history of the movie and those who have visited made it much more than a place to grab a bite to eat. Now I will have to watch the movie!! Thanks for making our day in Mystic all the more memorable!

I just grabbed a small plain cheese and enjoyed it a lot. Excellent cheese, flavorful sauce, and great crust. Only my second time, but they are definitely in the rotation.

Can’t go to Mystic without going to Mystic Pizza. Full disclosure, I have never seen the movie. There is lots of nostalgia and movie memorabilia around the restaurant. There is a tv with the movie playing in the main dining area. Frank Sinatra and other similar music is playing overhead. There is the main dining room, bar area, upstairs outdoor seating, and a few small tables on the sidewalk. The upstairs seating opens at 12.

I really enjoyed the food. We started with fried meatballs. Very crispy on the outside with a great sauce. Very flavorful and a nice mix in the meat. The pizza was also very good. It came out hot so we had to take a quick pause. Really good sauce and cheese. The cheese was very gooey and had a nice pull. I would definitely come back and would sit outside the next time.

Pizza is maybe not a slice of heaven but it's at least what they serve in purgatory. It's the pizza you get when you weren't bad in life, but you could have done better. It's ok. Pizza hut style if you're familiar. It's not bad and it will get you by if you're craving pizza. Staff was very friendly.
