We got a small pizza for takeout from this famous pizza spot. Very good pizza overall. The cheese has a unique taste to it, the crust was nice and crunchy. The dining portion of the space was packed and there was a waiting queue, and I can see why. Good quality food and service.

I’m currently sitting in my car now trying to decide what pizza place I’m going to go to next. I just walked up out of modern pizza upset because first of all I wasn’t greeted and welcomed. When I was standing at the door he just asked me how many people I told him just myself he said you can sit anywhere you like I sat down And I was sitting there me and another young gentleman came over and handed me some paper plates and napkins. Didn’t even say hello or welcome to modern then I noticed they took two other people order before me when I clearly was there before them 10 minutes ago, it seems that the people that worked there , who greet the customers appear to be racist just my observation I have a huge problem with spending my money with people who don’t treat me nice so I won’t be coming back here but go in see what your experiences like just giving my opinion on what I see and what I experience just now I’m a bit pissed off Especially after hearing all the hoopla about this place . The owner needs to have a meeting with the staff here in stress to them that they need to be more welcoming to people who spend their money here and keep this business afloat because the money that we spend is the reason why they have a job and get their paycheck.

If I could give 3.5 I would. We are from out of town and stopped in on a road trip. There was a line outside but did not take long. It’s good but it’s not mind blowing. Not even close to NY pizza or Anthony’s. We got the Italian with have minus the bacon and sausage. Medium is huge btw. The pizza was pretty greasy and my bf said the bacon was too overpowering. I’m not typically a meat lovers fan so maybe that’s why I wasn’t crazy about it. We also got the tossed salad and it was basically just iceberg with 2 olives a tomato and Italian dressing. Super mid pizza.

Service was excellent, sat down within 20 minutes with a party of 9. Waiter was attentive and helpful. Pizza was great. The crust was crispy but toppings did make it a little soupy. Overall the ingredients seemed very high quality. Out of 10, its a 9.1! (:

First time here— good service, but maybe it was an off night, but the pizza had all the signs of bad execution: soggy, undercooked crust from heavy, wet toppings; overly salty and greasy flavor; gummy, under-fermented dough; and poor oven temperature control.

4.5 stars.
Sally's is still my top in the area but their eggplant and Italian sausage pizza here is worth coming here again and again for in my opinion

Our waitress was lovely. The food was OK but I still prefer Sally's even though our local host said he preferred Modern.

I stopped into Modern Apizza on a Saturday afternoon with my daughter and had a really good experience overall. We arrived around 12:40 PM and only waited about 15 minutes for a table, which was great considering how popular New Haven pizza spots can get.
We ordered two small pies — the Mozzarella and a Meatball. The Mozzarella pizza had nice flavor but leaned a little undercooked for that classic New Haven char, with the crust on the softer side and a touch soupy in the middle. The Meatball pizza, on the other hand, was excellent: crispy crust, perfectly baked, and topped with sliced meatballs (not crumbled), which gave it great texture and flavor.
The atmosphere feels like a step back in time — a bit of a late ’90s vibe with lots of memorabilia on the walls. It’s not the most modern look, but it adds character and charm. By the time we left, the place had filled up quite a bit, so arriving slightly earlier worked in our favor.
Overall, Modern Apizza is a solid stop for anyone wanting the New Haven pizza experience. The pies are tasty, the service is friendly, and while the style can vary from pie to pie (sometimes softer, sometimes crispier), that’s part of the brick-oven character. Worth checking out if you’re in town
