Absolutely terrible rude hostess denied me the opportunity to patronize this restaurant. I was highly disappointed after fighting traffic from HPN airport and stopping downtown New Haven to charge my vehicle. I ventured past homeless camps being set up right outside the front door to find the door locked at 5:30 pm. I didn't give up I bravely waited until the chef saw me and sent the hostess to the door. They were not at capacity, the place had four customers dining in. There were lots of open tables. I asked if I could make a reservation or dine in while my car was charging. The nasty tempered hostess angrily replied there is a $40 minimum. I said that was fine with me and I even said I have cash so that's no problem. I felt the need to show her my hospital id and shared I work 2 blocks away at the hospital. She said maybe you should go next door to Pho they have cheaper menu. I was appalled but did so and spent $40 for one person and another $35 for take home items at PHO. (Which was great by the way) Actually, the money wasn’t the problem. I was treating myself for the night and not feeling well but really was pissed that this happened. I DO NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE give them your business knowing they treat customers this way. I don’t know if they own both businesses. I hope not because I wouldn’t want to give any of my hard earned money to them. Anyway, it left an awful impression.

I have never met in my life someone as rude as the waitress. She barely speaks in english and doesn't know how to explain but she is very rude with her customers.

Amazing omakase for the price! It ended up being about $140 a person after ordering a bottle of sake. The pieces were all very unique, including uni, scallop, king salmon, fatty tuna, and one tomato sauce one that was amazing. The pieces come out fairly quick and are made in front of you. It's a very intimate feeling omakase, highly recommend for an upscale experience for 2!

An unforgettable experience. Truly elevated sushi- our omakase course surprised and delighted us. An intimate atmosphere and truly warm hospitality from the chefs and hostess topped it off. The best sushi in the state.

Best sushi in the state, Omakase is excellent and Moore recently. Our trip for an à la carte dinner was just as good couldn’t recommend any other place. It’s expensive but 100% worth it.

The sushi here was the freshest we have had since moving from LA, and my wife and I decided to make it a long overdue date night.

We walked up to the restaurant where a sign instructed us to wait for the host. When she opened the door, she looked at us and said,
“Have you looked at the menu? We serve sushi. Only sushi. And it is a forty dollar minimum per person so look at the prices now.”

I was shocked. Was there some misunderstanding? I assured her we knew how to read and count and proceeded inside.

As a Yale psychiatrist, I am trained to notice patterns of behavior and be curious about the underlying psychology. As we sat, we observed that she greeted every other guest warmly and none of them received the same warning. Later we saw her checking in on other tables to ask about their experience. She never came to ours.

We could not help but ask ourselves what was the difference. The only one we could find was that we were the only Black guests in the restaurant that night.

When we asked for the check, I quietly told the host that the way she had treated us felt unprofessional. She looked shocked and said she was just trying to be helpful since we were not regulars, insisting, “You are being unfair to me. That is just how you took it.” I calmly repeated that it was unprofessional. She quickly walked away.

As we were leaving, she walked over to a white couple who had arrived after us and asked,
“Have you been here before?”

I will leave it to the reader to decide what happened and why it happened.

After Googling for a restaurant on Mt. Washington with an enticing menu and a spectacular view of the city of Pittsburgh, I found one that I had never heard of - Otaru - and made reservations, hoping for the best. Otaru surpassed my expectations in every way -- the Japanese food was amazing, the atmosphere was calm and light, and our server, Angela, was a professional delight. Perfect place to celebrate my birthday.

Excellent service. The host was friendly and explained every piece we got and how to best enjoy it. Every piece was well thought out. It is a hidden gem. Their rolls were the best I've ever had in terms of quality. The wagyu fois gras gyoza we got was well plated. After moving from LA, I missed good sushi and am glad to have found this.

Best sushi in CT hands down, and one of the best restaurants in CT. Worth every penny. Welcoming staff. Clean and professional chefs who guide you through the omakase experience. If you come to New Haven, you need to go here. New Haven and CT overall don't have much for outstanding food, but this is one of those places.

The ABSOLUTE BEST omakase not only in CT but arguably the US. I live in New York City and *constantly* drive all the way to New Haven just for this. Every place I've been to in New Jersey and NYC (too many to count) has not come close in terms of quality. Sunny and Kathy are the best hosts you could ask for. Such an amazing experience - if you are in the area, and even if you're not, Otaru is unmatched and can't miss. Would give 6 stars if I could!
