As a college student myself, I will NEVER step foot into your shop due to your ridiculous policy of not serving non college students!!! Therefore I shall stand by this wonderful diverse community of New Haven to go against your discriminating policies!! I really hope you guys go out of business before this year ends!!!

They went out of business. I don't understand what their business was, other than mining all of your data via a creepy a** app they made you install, couched in some b******* "this will help you get a job!!!!" on your phone in exchange for free coffee.

Great study space with affordable drinks and pastries! I love how clean and nicely decorated it is. As other reviewers mentioned, this space has an interesting business model that only caters to college students/staff who are able to present a university ID upon ordering their drink item on the Shiru Cafe phone app. They don't need to be Yale-affiliated. They just need to have a college ID. In return for affordable coffee/tea drinks and study space, we grant permission for Shiru Cafe to use our business/career data (that we provide when we sign up on the app so no surprises there) where they can connect us with companies who align with our career/field ambitions. I'm intrigued to see how that plays out in real life but in the meantime, I am loving the cafe, drink items, and friendly staff.

Amazing space with lots of great study spots, good beverages, and most of all, always safe, clean, studious and comfortable atmosphere for all college students in the area. It's unfortunate that in order for a cafe in New Haven to feel this way that they have to reinforce a students only rule.. but that is simply how it is in this city.

Great place for Yale students to study while enjoying free coffee.

I enjoyed the atmosphere, and was able to get a drink for free while studying for my classes. I really recommend to any student who has time to stop by.

I'm not sure how to feel about this business model. First off, it's a really nice space with huge ceilings and cute modern decor. There are tons of study spaces and an abundance of outlets. It's cool that you order through an app and even cooler that drinks are free. But to exclude everyone who doesn't have a university ID? That leaves a bad taste in the mouth, as good as their actual coffee is. It's also a little ways away from the true heart of campus (maybe how they could afford such a big space) to be a university-only cafe. Though I get the benefits of free coffee and an exclusive place kind of like an alumni club or something, the principle of the place bothers me so splitting the division (so far all 5-Star or 1-Star ratings) for somewhere in the middle.

The coffee and environment are nice, but I had to bribe a gymnastics coach to get in

It's a GREAT place to be. It's a nice place to study in, and the coffee is affordable! No it may not be open to community members but it is a safe and comfortable environment for ALL university students to study and cram for exams while enjoying free or $1 coffee in peace. I don't see why people who are non-students can't just go to the other 5 or 6 coffee shops around the area instead of making a big deal out of it and ruining a good opportunity for students to gain internship/work experiences during the college journey.

Cool spot to grab a nice cup of coffee (that's either free or a dollar!) and study. As an SCSU student, I think this is a great place to get college students on their feet after graduation. Whether that's an internship, networking or a job in your field, it's made to help students in more ways than just providing them caffeine and a study space! Will be spending a lot of time here in the future :)

Yes I am giving my data for coffee but I do that everywhere. And it is not a cafe, it's a recruiting space so needs to be looked at with a different perspective. I think it's an interesting model.
