4.5 / 5.0 - I’d been to the Loop for Japanese groceries and sweets, but this was my first time trying their brunch, which they have on weekends, along with their lunch menu.
They have cafeteria style seating and you order and pick up your food at the counter. It’s quite spacious with large picnic tables and bar seating, but it was almost full when we went past noon yesterday.
It took time to order and get our food, so if you’re in a rush, it may be better to pick up pre-made lunches or sushi from the grocery store instead.
I tried the Open Tamago Sando, which was so delicious I will definitely have to order again. The noodles didn’t have much broth or toppings, so maybe not the best option if you’re looking for something that’s not mostly carbs.
They had outdoor seating, which will be nice once it’s warmer.
Excellent brunch! I had the avocado toast, and it was superior. My son ordered the eggs Benedict, and it was equally as delicious! The brunch ingredients are fresh, and the presentation is just gorgeous. I will definitely return!!!!
Very nice food, especially their brunch menu.
Lovely place to light meals. Visited during the weekend and it was a bit busy. Overall would like to try weekday lunches.
I’ve dined here many times before and usually had good experiences, which made this visit especially disappointing. The food itself was expensive as usual; the beef of mashumen surf & turf was almost completely raw and inedible. In addition, a bottle of wine that was recommended to us was unavailable after we ordered it.
What made the experience worse was the interaction at the end of the meal. After we left a standard tip consistent with usual practice, the server came back twice to express it was not enough, in a way that we both felt uncomfortable. Given the issues with the food and the order, and the fact that I did not under-tip at all, this only further worsened the overall experience. A very poor way to end an already disappointing meal.
Stepped on a mouse trap while navigating with a stroller. The manager didn’t help or apologize. I had to help myself pulling those sticky pads off both of my shoes while managing a baby. Big hazard. Also would note that I had multiple instances where the checkout price is higher than the tag price (in addition to the taxes and fees) which is pretty dishonest. I had also found a few products that have expired but still on the shelf. Again, whenever I point those issues out, they are very dismissive and would say ok and just walk away.
Cold food less than impressive. The staff was niece and friendly but Ill not go back
Rating is based solely on the grocery store as we did not try the wine bar yet. The grocery store is a little gem. Unique with a coffee bar, great selection of authentic japanese grocery items at fair prices. Very clean and well organized. Friendly staff. We plan to go back soon and try out the rest of the place!
Bomb onigiri. Also, great selection of other imported east Asian goods.
The salmon confit was amazing. The best salmon I have ever tasted! The other items we ordered, i.e. pork belly and chicken were all unique and tasty.
Restaurantji Recommends
The cashier has horrible customer service! He gave me attitude because I asked him a simple question on pricing on the item I was purchasing which was incorrectly priced by $7.
Then wanted to argue as if I didn't know what I was looking at! Little man needs an attitude adjustment! I'd definitely never set foot in there again!
Food poisoned by the onigiri or the sushi, terrible quality fish/salmon. The sparkling yuzu lemonade was the only thing edible
The restaurant/ramen orders stop at 2:30 despite their listing on Google. They also several times I've been by just not been doing any fresh food. So I think after 3 attempts I have given up on them in that capacity. The food available ends up being either onigiri (fine, mid tier), packed sushi (okay), or other options like kastu curry etc and other donburi with a provided microwave.
It's... fine. Especially if you need an option in the area.
The market is on the expensive side for relative prices on the same products in other Asian markets in the area/state.
Opening hours are unreliable (esp the coffee bar)
Decent array of Asian foods but on a smaller scale. Greatest thing is they're open till 9pm, all other Asain grocery stores close at 7pm.
