The meatballs in the sub had a weird texture and not much flavor. The "Killer" sub, basically an Italian sub, was good but lacked the hot peppers I asked for. The scallop dinner was modified at our request to replace butter with oil but lacked flavor. I
Having moved to Norwich in 2003, I must be the only person in town who hasn’t had the good fortune to eat at Irene’s Restaurant. My wife finally dragged me in (because I hate trying new things) and I am OH so glad she did. When we chose our booth to sit in (which was clearly marked as having just been cleaned) our waitress promptly arrived to get our drink orders. When she returned, I asked our waitress Cait who has been working there for 18 years, “what is the item on your menu, that people would drive way out of their way to get just because Irene’s serves the best?” Before she could answer, a couple of ladies in the booth next to us said “The Corn Chowder!” They had traveled over 30 minutes one way, just to have the corn chowder here. Then Cait recommended the Chicken Parmigiana with spaghetti. I said that I didn’t need to see the menu, and I ordered exactly what all the ladies mentioned. The corn chowder arrived nice and hot the way I like my soups, and it was without a doubt the BEST corn chowder I’ve ever had. It was so good, I only allowed my wife a single spoon full to taste. After every drop of the soup was gone, the Chicken Parm with a side of spaghetti arrived. A large portion of two chicken cutlets and spaghetti covered in their homemade sauce was simply heaven in taste and more than enough to quench the huge hunger I had arrived with. Will I be coming back to Irene’s again? YES, as soon as possible!! The warm friendly waitress we had, plus the excellent food quality, said to me “This is now my new FAVORITE restaurant in town”. So, if you are ever in or near Norwich, Connecticut, do your taste buds a favor and make a stop in Irene’s Family Restaurant and ask for Cait.
Excellent food, great pricing, bring your own beverage. Eat in or Take out.
I have never eaten in the restaurant, but I get takeout and delivery often. The food is really good and portions are generous! The employees are very nice people. Great local restaurant!

Irene's Family Restaurant provides very good subs & pizza in a traditional family-style diner. I had the lamb & beef gyros and then a peanut butter cake, which were all very good. This is located a short drive from the Leffingwell House Museum, so it's a good place to stop on your way back to the highway.
We needed a caterer for the reception for our mom’s funeral. We over ordered, of course, but we ordered salad, ziti, with meat sauce and chicken piccata, (2) trays each. There were about 40 +/- people. Everyone ate their fill and we had (1) tray each left over, which we donates to the local Meal Center. Everyone commented how great the food was. The hot trays were delivered in hot box, that kept everything hot, for several hours. It was also very reasonably priced.
apparently this place is run by dummies, someone is going to die from there undercooked food one of these days, i just hope they know how to properly F.I.F.O because there food is getting trash always rushing orders out the door, like i know dominoes can cook a pizza in there turbo chef in ten minutes but that dont mean you can do it with traditional pizza. do your only job and cook the damn food.
Irene's was a family owned breakfast place where locals and travelers were treated with kindness and wonderful hospitality. Comfortable atmosphere and good service. Food was ok not spectacular.
