A Solid Spot for Pizza in Torrington
As someone who’s enjoyed pizza from renowned spots in Chicago and Brooklyn, and who’s tried many of the local pizza places in Torrington, I consider myself pretty knowledgeable when it comes to finding a good slice. My go-to pizza is usually a classic pepperoni, so I was intrigued when I saw one of my favorite pizza reviewers give Sasso’s Coal Fired Pizza a high score. After a few months of anticipation, I finally decided to check it out.
I’ve been to Sasso’s twice now and have tried both their New Haven style pizza and the Sweet & Spicy Italian. My first visit was focused on exploring these two distinct styles, and while I was excited to try the New Haven style, I found it didn’t quite hit the mark for me. As someone who leans towards pepperoni, the New Haven style just wasn’t something I’d go for again.
On the other hand, the Sweet & Spicy Italian really stood out, especially if you’re a pepperoni lover like me. The blend of sweet and spicy elements is a winner. However, on my second visit, I noticed some inconsistency in the flavor. The spice level was toned down significantly, which left me a bit disappointed after such a strong first impression.
One thing I will say is that Sasso’s is definitely a spot where dining in makes all the difference. The location next to the Warner Theater is perfect, and the ambiance is lively, especially on the weekends. If you’re after a more immersive pizza experience in the heart of Torrington, this place is a great choice.
That said, while I didn’t enjoy the New Haven style and won’t be trying it again, I would still come back for the Sweet & Spicy Italian. But with two large pies setting you back over $60, I’d probably reserve Sasso’s for special occasions rather than a quick pizza fix. If you’re in Torrington and looking for a nice spot to enjoy a meal, this place should be on your list—just be aware that it’s more of a sit-down experience rather than a grab-and-go pizza joint.

Enjoyed a delicious New Haven style pizza, topped with roasted garlic. Ordered a large to finish the rest at home. My wife had the salad with grilled chicken, nice large portion which she enjoyed. The service was spot-on. Comfortable setting.

Service was slow at the bar. I know the pizza is coal fired, but the 3x I have had the pizza, it was black. A little char is fine, but eating burnt pizza is horrible. I don't care what the barstool guy says, this pizza seems consistently burnt. Some people might like this, just not me. I won't be back for pizza, but I might try other items on the menu. Just sayin'

The pizza was excellent. Some spots came out a little more burned than I would like, but charred spots are part of the charm of coal fired pizza.
Cocktails are a little pricey; I didn't see anything below $12. Food aside from pizza had a good selection, but the pizza is the standout.

The food is really great but sometimes you get a little forgotten and will have to ask again for the drink you ordered or a box/check. No big deal.
My one major complaint is WHY IS THE GARLIC AIOLI GONE??? Dishonor on you, dishonor on your cow ?

The kitchen was closed when I arrived, but I still ended up getting a pizza that was missing 1 slice, but it was a free pizza, so I'm definitely not complaining. The waitress said it was a "sweet and spicy" pizza. It was probably the best pizza I've had in 10 years. And that says a lot because I'm a trucker, and I get around to a lot of different places/ states. And I order a lot of pizza delivery to my truck. I don't know how much it should have cost but whatever the price, it's worth it.
