This is not a shepherd pie. And no glass to go with the ale. Good thing it was only lunch.

Went here for dinner, ordered fish and chips and shepherd’s pie. Both were sooooooo delicious!! They taste just like the ones I had in England!!! Don’t skip on this one when you are in Union Market! Cheers!

Hands down the best fish and chips I’ve ever had!! Above Ground DC ruined me for all others! The batter was impossibly crisp without being greasy and the fish flaked apart like butter. You can tell it’s fresh and cooked with real care. The fries were golden and seasoned just right and that house-made tartar sauce? Unreal!! You can taste the chef’s love for good food in every bite. Whether you’re a local or just wandering through the market, this spot is an absolute must!!!

The fish and chips here is unbeatable! Great little spot! The malt vinegar for the chips just makes it even better!

Great fish - crispy - fresh - tasty ( got the tartar and curry mayo ). Chips were a bit of a let down in comparison to the fish -

TLDR: I highly recommend Aboveground for your fish-and-chips needs (plus good vibes)!
Aboveground is a hidden gem in DC, serving up delicious fish and chips from London, as well as other bites with South/Southeastern Asian influences. My wife and I had heard about this place, so we ventured to Union Market to see what it was all about!
We ordered the big fish sandwiches, two sides of chips (French fries), and the curry fish puff pastries (similar to samosas)—all three were great! The fish was fresh, hot, and fried perfectly. Same goes for the fries. Our favorite dish, though, was the curry fish pastries…wow, they caught us off guard with those. The pastries were large, soft, samosa-like treats that we devoured. Also, the ingredients are nut-free (but still tasty), which was a bonus since my wife has a nut allergy.
Finally, the chef, Nick Martino, and his staff were friendly and welcoming. The chef even explained how he prepares the dishes and the history of some of the dishes. The warm hospitality we experienced just added to the delicious flavors we experienced.

We are in DC for a trip and staying near Union Market. I love good fish and chips so I got my dinner at Above Ground. The portions are very generous, the prices quite reasonable and they were hands down some of the best fish and chips I have ever had. I'll definitely be back next time I am in DC.

Steak & Ale pie was $10 for mostly potato with 2 pieces of steak that were all gristle and fat. Worst pie I've ever eaten.

I was looking forward to trying this out since I’ve been craving some fish and chips! But as someone who grew up in UK, the food was too seasoned (especially the chips!). The fish and mushy peas were delicious though and the portion was not bad although $19 (without tax) was a bit much compared to prices in local British fish and chips shops. I think if they made everything less seasoned it would seem more authentic 😂🇬🇧

British for in the Union Market ABOVEGROUND. Lots of choices including sausages rolls, shepherds pie, fish and chips etc. There's even British canned goods and sweets. I got fish and chips. The portions are good. It came with mushy peas. The batter was crispy but a bit salty
Tried the steak and ale pie. Don’t bother. Overly salty, very watery inside, and average pastry only covers the top of the tin dish it comes in. Save your money and either get something else or go elsewhere.
