This high quality European style bakery was right next door to our hotel, so we got breakfast there 3 days in a row. Buttermilk biscuits were great, as was the avocado veggie bagel, fruity bran muffin, yogurt granola parfait, and tea lattes. Tons of interesting canned foods on shelves both local and nice Euro imports, cheeses, and takeaway meals. A few seats family style inside, and more cafe tables outside. Surprised they only have one odd type of egg - not fried, just near-liquid...
This is almost certainly the best French bakery in Washington, DC. It would likely be the best in all cities in the eastern US except possibly NYC. It's mainly a takeout place.

We went to Furst on Connecticut Avenue after trying their handiwork at the Phillips Collection. This review is about their bread and butter (the bread itself). We bought a sour dough loaf, a simple sandwich on a baguette and some other things. The bread in both cases had the perfect combination of crunchy crust and chewy texture inside.
