Our go-to, cozy neighborhood spot. Super friendly people and comforting food.
Update: We made our monthly visit last Friday (8/3/25) at 7 pm and it was closed. We sincerely hope it isnât for good.
Great food. The chocolate moose and tiramisu cake were incredible. My friends and I loved all of our meals. Flavorful sauce and interesting potato stuffed pasta. The staff were friendly and attentive as well.

Let me explain! The food was REALLY GOOD. But, our order was lost and there were several issues. We arrived at 7:22pm and left about 9:40pm. We waited well over an hour for our food, other people came and went. Should I give this place a 1 star. Probably, BUT I wonât! Iâll give them 3 stars for the service we recieved and for them making the situation right. I appreciate what they did to rectify our experience. Their customer service was great. When we return I hope that our experience will be better, we ate for free, next time I hope to pay for my food. Yes, itâs true, it does smell weird.

I had the most incredible dinner at Giovanni's Trattu! From the moment we walked in, the ambiance was warm, welcoming, and authentically Italian. The service was impeccable, with our server being both attentive and knowledgeable.
The real star of the show, however, was the food. I ordered the Osso Buco, and it was simply divine. The veal was so tender it fell off the bone and melted in my mouth, and the rich, flavorful sauce was a perfect complement to the creamy risotto it was served on. Every single bite was a taste of heaven. I cannot recommend this place enough!
We saw the good ratings and were expecting a great dinner, but we were disappointed. First, there was a bad toilet smell in the restaurant. Then, we had to wait a lot (~40min) for the main courses. But the most disappointing was the cuisine: there was too little quantity and it was too salty, which didnât make it for the taste unfortunately.
Too expensive for mediocre food. Too slow service
Smells like you are eating inside a sewer. Awful smell.

Absolutely banging beef Milanese, great wine, decent prices, place REEKS of piss. They must want you to feel as though you are quite literally IN the canals of Venice, bc I felt like the only thing I could smell more than the wonderful tomato sauce they have cooking up is the stench of fresh ammonia rich urine. I genuinely was confounded how nobody else but the people at my table could smell it, and don't worry I asked: nobody I was eating with was a) a baby or b) an incontinent adult. Just unfathomable. Recommend a sponsorship with oxyclean.
Honestly just couldnât get over the horrible smell. The people were nice, the food was fine, etc. But as soon as you walk in, youâre hit with an overwhelming musty smell / sewer odor that doesnât go away no matter where you are in the restaurant. I know I have a sensitive nose but this was overpowering. If I wasnât there with a work group I would have left and never would have eaten there.
Donât know why itâs so highly reviewed- seems like the mentions of horrible odors go back at least a decade. There is obviously some issue.
Absolutely delicious Italian cuisine from an amazing and professional staff. Highly recommend the Italian cheesecake.
Cheap chairs, food was mid tier but the service was excellent.
A true hidden gem. Delicious food and great service. The owner is actively involved in providing service and attending to customers. A must if visiting DC!!
