I've been to almost every cocktail bar in DC and OKPB's drinks are the best. Just as importantly, service is consistently welcoming/accommodating and unpretentious (a real rarity for cocktail bars). The wait time is inconvenient but it's just because OKPB is amazing and everyone wants to go (plus space is small). Plan on a significant wait (45 min - 1.5 hrs) during prime hours. During your wait, head over to the raven, Marx, la tejana, or suns.

My girlfriend and I had a pleasant evening in Mount Pleasant, a neighborhood we had been keen to explore. We chatted up the host at OKPB and were told there would be a “short wait”. We waited over an hour and a half… and got a lovely tasting high life at the Raven Grille (10/10) during this wait. Upon our return we were greeted by a large loud party getting off of a bus, and they were immediately brought inside by the host and seated. We waited patiently outside, talked to the host, and were finally allowed in. We were then asked to stand at a radiator that somehow doubled as a standing table?? When we were seated, our drinks took 45+ minutes, and cost $18 each, but I hate to inform you all, they were good. - also from Anne

This is my favorite bar in DC, hands down. I always bring guests from out of town. It has a speakeasy curated vibe, without being cheesy or over the top. Bartenders are excellent and offer excellent recommendations.

Delightful speakeasy with remarkably cozy vibes, super friendly service, and delicious cocktails. This small, no-reservations-allowed space is hard to snag a spot in (unless you’re willing to wait in their multi-hour-long waitlist), but it’s 100% worth the hype and effort. I’d recommend trying to come a bit earlier in the night or on a slightly off day — we came by around 8 PM on a Thursday — and you might be able to slip in with no or minimal wait. We were initially placed at a standing table, then relocated to a proper table when one opened up after about 30 minutes. It is a smidge loud, but still manageable, and I love the cozy, homey atmosphere created by the dim lighting, almost industrial architecture mixed with old fashioned bookshelves (which double as bathroom doors), and candles.
They have a short menu of custom cocktails you can choose from, or you can also ask for any of the classics and/or tell the bartender what you typically enjoy and let them come up with a good fit. We tried a smattering of cocktails, including two from their menu, a whiskey sour, and a bee sting (which the bartender selected for us based on our general preferences). Each one was expertly crafted and extremely tasty, and made so much better by the ambiance.
