Manager Victoria was very rude and condescending, I will not be back

I just want to say that I’m neither Russian nor Ukrainian… however Russian is a second language for me, Romanian is my first. My girlfriend and I walk in for a table and were excited to have some Eastern European food. While we’re waiting for a table I hear the hostess talking in Ukrainian so I try to talk to her in the Russian I know because I got excited to hear a language that I’m familiar with. She immediately switches to English and tells me that the Russian language is not welcome there. I explain to her that I’m not Russian nor Ukrainian, but I just speak the language… she tells me again that they “aren’t friendly with Russian language in that space”. After we get seated, I noticed the servers and hostess glancing at us with unpleasant looks, while talking amongst themselves—we were the only table in that corner.  We felt very unwelcomed. It was not appropriate for a hostess of a public restaurant to tell a paying costumer that their language is not welcomed there simply due to a political conflict that is happening across the world. Also… the music was terrible.

The restaurant was decorated with bright colors and Ukraine paintings, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Service was friendly and attentive.

Lunch prices were reasonable and affordable, offering good value for the quality.

The dishes were freshly prepared, the portions were decent, though the flavors were bland. I used up all the sour cream I got to give my dish more flavor.

We ordered:

4*Ukrainian Lunch Combo
Includes Chicken dumplings, a small sausage, potato pancakes, a seasonal salad, and sour cream. It was a light and healthy lunch. Great presentation.

3* Ukrainian Beef Borscht:
Fresh, light, and bland.

4*Soup of the day: rich creamy soup of beef and mushrooms.

3*Meat Holubtsi: stuffed cabbage were bland and healthy, but not much of taste.

A pleasant spot for trying out Ukrainian cuisine in a cozy setting on Capitol Hill. Ideal for a relaxed meal.

I had an amazing experience at Ruta, and I can’t recommend it enough! From the moment I walked in, the warm and cozy atmosphere made me feel right at home.

The food was incredibly authentic and full of rich flavors—just like a homemade meal. Every dish was prepared with care, from the perfectly cooked borsch to the delicious varenyky (dumplings) and tender holubtsi (stuffed cabbage rolls). You could truly taste the tradition in every bite!

The service was also fantastic—the staff was friendly, welcoming, and happy to share recommendations. Whether you’re familiar with Ukrainian cuisine or trying it for the first time, Ruta is a must-visit for a truly authentic experience. I can’t wait to come back! 🇺🇦✨

I'm in love ......Went here a few weeks ago and can't stop thinking about it. I had the Borscht with beef, the Ukrainian breakfast and an espresso Martini. Fantastic food, and service.

Making my mouth water just thinking about it, and darn it, I'm gonna make this part of my weekly routine.....
