Great venue with two moods: the front elegant, cozy, warm. The back a large space, bright, packed, and energetic (hard to have a conversation) like a true Italian restaurant.
It's a good Italian option in DC.
Don't miss the parmigiana di melanzane, a deconstructed unconventional execution that works. Fritto misto lightly fried, delicious!
Good carbonara, with a generous serving of very good guanciale The agnolotti e limone : tasty but needs some tuning: dough it too tick - too much past! also difficult to cut, and, when you do, all the filling come out.
TiramisĂč : not a huge fan, missed some coffee.
Enjoyed the lambrusco!

Grateful to have San Matteo in the neighborhood. Portions are substantial for seriously great homemade pasta â the move is definitely to follow up their amazing happy hour deals (the fried artichoke is top-notch, the $10 cocktails sneakily strong) with one of those pasta dishes. The mafaldine and gnocchi were stellar. Excited to make it part of the regular rotation.

Every dish I tried was exceptional â bursting with flavor and clearly made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. The drinks menu was equally impressive, and the manager personally recommended a few options that paired perfectly with the food. đđ It felt like a special experience from start to finish. I left completely satisfied and already looking forward to my next visit. For anyone who loves authentic Italian cuisine, this place is an absolute must!
Absolutely lovely hidden gem. I had the funghi pasta dish and wanted to take a bath in the sauce, so yummy! The baby kale cesar was awesome as well. The atmosphere was classy and warm. Gluten free and vegetarian friendly!

San Matteo was very accommodating, clean, and the drinks and apps were amazing! The service started off great we were greeted at the front and taken to the dining area which I did not expect to be so large. It was beautifully decorated and was a great vibe. Our waiter promptly brought our drinks. The lemonade is freshly made and delicious. My friends got drinks that they raved about. At some point I server stopped coming by as much. We placed an order for apps and they came out in a fairly timely manner. We loved the fritto misto. Our entrees took a little while to come out which is fine but our server never came by to check in or to just let us know it was on the way, which was a little off putting. We ordered the squid ink pasta, lemon and spinach ravioli dish, manicotti dish, and the parpadelle funghi dish. One of us loved our dish and that was the lemon spinach ravioli. The others felt like there was a lack of flavor and the seafood in my squid ink seemed over cooked. One of my friends asked if she could change the sauce in her squid ink pasta and the restaurant happily accommodated, so that was very nice. I would come back for the appetizers. We got the fritto misto which was amazing and the arancini dish which I loved. I would say give it a try if youâre interested.

The servers were great. The food, excellent. The atmosphere was beautiful. the only problem I had was with the, too loud for me, background music.
San Matteo is such a neighborhood gem, with consistently stellar food and service. I always order one of the house-made pastas and end with the tiramisu and chocolate lava cake. The servers are warm and attentive-- shout out to Carolina who was so friendly and extremely accommodating of our picky eater's needs!

Man I hate to do this but this was really, really rough. Biggest complaint is the lamb isnât a cut of lamb, itâs a bunch of pre-cooked shredded meat thatâs burnt and then put into a rectangle shape. If you order wine by the glass theyâll give you something that clearly been open a few days. No wait for a table but it took 20 minutes for a waiter to come by.

I almost never write reviews, but this place is fabulous, especially for the money. Sure you can get better service and better plating aesthetic at Michelin star places, but I challenge you to find better italian flavor and atmosphere at this price in this city.

Wowwww so amazing. Delectable agnolotti with the perfect light lemon zest and my husband had the gnocchi dish but swapped in gluten free pasta and it was also delicious with yummy sun-dried tomato flavor shining. The affogato for dessert was heavenly. 5 stars all around you wonât regret it.
