4.00 dollars a slice is ridiculous
Today will be my last day coming in there.
Decent NY style pizza (for the area), quick and easy.

Tell your chef to eat that salad that he made me incorrectly. I dont need the refund. Your chef whined and complained after messing it up. Then you send me out cold chicken, wrong salad and no dressing. Just because I may look a bit more american does not mean I cant understand Spanish. And to hear complaining when I am so hungry. In front of my son too. Who is more Spanish than I am. Ive been coming there for years and years. My father would go out of his way for their Cheese slice. Its not as good as it was. Still not horrible. But this was an experience I won't forget. Tonys Cafe for the win!!! You wont be let down there. About 2 miles north. The better Tonys!!!!

Tony's is a local Italian restaurant in Newark along Chestnut Hill Road (DE 4) in a shopping plaza anchored by the local Shoprite. The dining area is basic, mostly what you'd expect from a local restaurant. However, the decor could use a little bit of an update and then it'd be just right.
The menu features what you'd expect from an Italian restaurant in the orbit of Philadelphia - pizzas, pastas, strombolis, etc. and have a great variety of different pizzas. For my meal, I went with a vegetarian pizza (spinach, tomato and ricotta cheese) and an order of garlic bread. The pizza itself was pretty tasty and the ricotta made a good contrast to the mozzarella on the pie itself and the vegetables were generally nice and fresh. The crust was also pretty decent as it could hold the slice and had just enough crisp for a good thin-crust pizza. The miss for me was the garlic bread. I don't know if it was the preparation for my particular order, but my bread had some minced garlic topping the butter on the bread rather than well-dispersed in the butter. I love garlic but trying to eat those pieces of minced garlic wasn't for me as it was bitter. I would like to see them better incorporate the garlic into the bread as that might help the read out. The garlic aside, the bread was nicely baked and had the butter and garlic been better spread I would have really enjoyed it.
The service was decent as well. I didn't have to wait too long for a refill and the server made sure I was take care of at my table.
Overall, it's a nice neighborhood Italian restaurant for those local to Newark and you'll at least get an enjoyable meal if you visit here.

In my opinion this place has gone down hill since we started getting food there about 2 years ago. The last two times I’ve gone to pick up food they tell me 15 minutes yet they don’t start making it until after I’ve arrived for pickup. I watched my food sit there for 10 minutes on the counter and finally had to ask them to hand it over after placing the order 45 minutes prior with no one else waiting for food. My dad went to pick food up yesterday and watched two of the employees argue whether they made the food already or not. The food also made my wife sick yesterday.

In 2024, I got a large meatball pizza and I ordered online. It was good. A few months ago, I ordered the same pizza online and it was old, stale, and re-heated. I thought maybe that was just a one time thing, but a few months later, I got a Perroni pizza and it was stale and reheated. The crust was hard. It was as if they made it a few days ago, froze it, then reheated it. They are terrible. A lot of places do this these days though, so I don't know of a good restaurant. Also, some of their employees can't speak English and just give you a blank stare when you try to order.

My work place caters lunch from them. I like their chicken parm.
Years ago I got a tray of broccoli rabe for our lunch gathering. It was very sandy and we had to throw the whole tray ($40) away.
Occasionally I get pizza from them. The place is okay but I never dined in.

One of the few good pizza places in the area. This is real pizza. If you disagree you are stupid.
Wonderful food, generous portion sizes, and attentive staff. My only complaint is that paying by credit card triggered a 3.5% fee that was never really explained to me upfront. I didn't realize what had happened until I got home, looked at my receipt, and saw that the food cost AND tip amount were 3.5% higher than what it was supposed to be. I had recalled the cashier saying something about the cash register calculating the bill in a certain way, but she never made clear that it was a credit card fee.
I don't mind local businesses charging this fee, in principle -- I'd just like to know about it before I swipe my card.
