My experience with Cakes by Kim was unfortunately not a great one due to poor customer service. I’m not exactly sure who I was speaking with during my phone calls, but the communication throughout the ordering process was extremely frustrating.
Anytime I called to discuss the order I was trying to place through the online form, I was either talked over, cut short, or told that someone would email me—emails that I never received. When I called again, I was told they were very busy and only had two people working that day, which seemed to explain the lack of communication but did not excuse it.
Because of this, when I arrived to pick up my cake, it was completely wrong. I then had to wait an additional 45 minutes for the cake to be corrected. The final cake did not resemble the reference photos I had provided. I was told this was due to the products they use, but had this been communicated to me beforehand, expectations could have been managed prior to pickup. The cake also appeared rushed and poorly put together.
That said, my guests did enjoy the taste of the cake. While it tasted good, the customer service was awful. I would not recommend Cakes by Kim unless you are prepared to go through a very frustrating ordering process.

We had our wedding cake made by Cakes by Kim because they work with the Hockessin Memorial Hall. We went in for a tasting, which was great! There were a lot of options, and the baker was helpful for answering questions. The design we chose for our wedding cake was an upcharge, which was fine - that just meant that we had to pay the balance that wasn't covered by the hall. Cakes by Kim called me to ask me for my email (which could have been written down at the cake tasting). I provided my email, and they said they would send an invoice. I never got the invoice via email, and then I tried calling to see if they could send it over or if I could pay over the phone and I was on hold for approximately 20 minutes. I finally decided to hang up and get in my car and drive over there and I told them I never received an invoice, but that I wanted to pay off the balance of our wedding cake. I paid in person and that took care of it, but I was disappointed that I had to go out of my way for something that could have been taken care of electronically.

My husband and I had our wedding cake made here. The tasting months prior was amazing. They were very thorough on making sure they created our vision exactly how we wanted it. I wound up forgetting to bring the faux flowers we were using, and we wound up mailing them to Kim. She was very communicative and let us know she received them. I would absolutely make the trip to purchase from here again even though I live 1.5 hours away.

I will come back to Cakes by Kim for every cake purchase in my future. I went to another bakery in Delaware first and was quoted an outrageous $220 price for my son’s birthday cake so I walked out. I proceeded to look up other bakerys in the area and decided to check out Cakes by Kim. Not only was their price insanely reasonable but the cake was DELICIOUS. The best cake I’ve had in years! The cake itself was so moist and the icing was perfection. Everyone at my son’s party was asking where I got it from and wanted extra to take home. Everyone who works inside the bakery is so nice, I don’t have a single bad thing to say.

They worked with me to get my order processed by being flexible. Lauren, the manager helped make it happen after speaking with her directly. Jackie was very pleasant and helpful too.
I had a wedding dinner at a restaurant this past Saturday . I contacted this bakery and they offered delivery and to make my cake as close as the picture i showed them. When i arrived at the restaurant the cake was brought out and taking out the box when we all saw the cake was dented. I paid $430 for this cake! When i contacted them and ask for a manger to contact me asap the response was that the cake was in tacked when it left the bakery. So clearly OBVIOUSLY the accident happened when your delivery person delivered it. I sent pictures for proof. At lease something could have been done. I did pay $430. Also everyone saw the cake. It’s a shame because the cake could have been beautiful especially when ir was suppose to be for a WEDDING dinner. Never again will get a cake from. I ADVISE ANYONE WHO SEES THIS. DO NOT GET A CAKE FROM HERE. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS HORRIBLE! I’m very disappointed!

I love Cakes by Kim. The store has a warm and inviting atmosphere with lots of delicious-looking pastries on display. The prices are good and the quality is excellent. I love that you can see the kitchen from the front of the store. It looks clean and orderly. The staff is always friendly. I enjoy their danishes, croissants, and cupcakes, and the staff told me to call them first thing in the morning with any special requests for type of filling or icing and they’ll have them finished later the same day. My wife and son also love the pastries, especially the cupcakes and cake pops. Everything I have tried is always excellent. The croissants and danishes are flaky and moist with a very delicate texture—not chewy at all. The fruit fillings are always perfect and the right balance of tart and sweet while the chocolate fillings are deep, rich, and velvety. The cupcakes are always moist with wonderful flavor and creamy icing. I’ve tried other bakeries in the area and Cakes by Kim is head and shoulders above the rest. A+

I love coming here. Theyre just warm people (with a beautiful orderly kitchen) and the desserts are skillfully good. My husbands favorite cherry danishes. And I LOVE the chocolate croissants and cake pops.
I cannot stress this enough sweets taste so much better when theyre made with warmth and Im never flustered here--openly gawking at the sweets and the baking schedule on a weekly basis.
They have great prices and creativity. Their butter cream is truly light(im usually a whipped cream girl) and their chocolate fillings are magical and truly chocolatey!!
Theyre on the same side road as the dollar general so bring yourself or your family and get something nice! You wont regret it
