While on a family road trip, we wanted to find somewhere delicious, local, and good for small children. There was so many great options and we highly recommend the classic burger, pimento cheese sandwich and the calamari. The staff was very hardworking and friendly, and you can tell they were working as a great team. We had a fantastic time with delicious food, atmosphere, and such a friendly crowdKid-friendliness: High chairs but no changing table

We tried the Mildred Club, a delightful sandwich made with toasted sourdough, turkey, ham, bacon, lettuce, and 1000 Island dressing. I opted for Swiss cheese instead of cheddar, which added a delicious twist. The sandwich was a flavorful delight. My husband ordered the lamb burger, which came with feta, roasted red pepper, and zaatar aioli. I had a taste, and it was juicy and cooked to perfection. For dessert, we enjoyed the strawberry shortcake and Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheesecake, both of which were absolutely delicious. We also tried the jalapeño margarita a bit too spicy. Also please note 12% service charge.

Apparently Bert Gill won't let anyone in his kitchens who doesn't know how to cook. I have ordered two things on 2 visits, one at Blue Gill and one at New Deal, both containing ingredients that are over cooked violently at almost all restaurants, regardless of price. The first was fried shrimp, which was cooked to perfection. Served tender and juicy. The second was buttermilk fried chicken salad. The chicken was so light and airy it could have floated off the plate. And, the focaccia served at New Deal is alone worth the visit. Maybe they'll start selling it by the loaf? Did I mention the house-made ice cream at Blue Gill? Gill's places, including Mildred's, serve unquestionably the best food in Gainesville. The fact that the servers are invariably perfectly trained just makes the food taste even better.Vegetarian options: Menu is vegan and vegetarian friendly. Not just one veg dish thrown on the menu to "satisfy" non-meat eaters.Kid-friendliness: The attitude is laid back and kid friendly, but I don't think there's a kid's menu. Plenty on the menu kids would like, though.

New deal cafe is the sister restaurant to Mildred's and offers pretty standard american food like burgers, sandwiches, salads, and flatbreads. If the two restaurants are sisters, New Deal is the cheaper, less pretentious sister. They have outdoor seating options and a good drink selection as well. The staff are all nice and do their jobs well. I personally really enjoy their sloppy Joe with tempeh and because I often order that with a side salad, we will split the fries appetizer. They have great fries and I've never been disappointed with one of their large selection of dessert options. The Coconut Cream Cake is my favorite of their desserts and comes as a HUGE slice.

Horrible experience and awful customer service. Food came out cold (twice.)Management's reason "we are just too busy to serve everyone correctly"Do not spend your time or money on this place.

Thank you to the person that paid for my meal. Sorry, I did not get to thank you, as I did not understand what the waitress told me.You made my day! I hope things work out so I can thank you in person.Everything was great and friendly staff.

OK the menu is different and nice, the wine list crazy high. The real Shock, if you aren't counting, is a service fee, I think 16%. You might expect this on a large party but it is a standard line item buried on all tabs. Once I asked my server and got a long song and dance explanation about that going the the "back of the shop folks". She seemed genuinely uneasy being asked, not the first time I'm sure. So to compound the insult is the computer generated "suggested" tip chart at the bottom of the ticket that goes to 25% along with the already billed service charge. And this is typical in that the tip is based on the tax as well. This is bold beyond belief. I've never been one to stiff a server but this is an awkward moment. I calculate my tip, deduct the service charges and leave a tip I'm not proud of. I suppose writing this review and dropping New Deal from my preferred places to dine,

Absolutely phenomenal, our server Kalyn was amazing and provided such great service. My girlfriend and I stopped for lunch and found our new favorite lunch spot! The UF burger was the best I’ve had in a long time. We are both servers and are not normally impressed when served by other people but Kalyn went above our expectations! Thank you Kalyn and the kitchen for an amazing lunch! Best local spot in town.

Pretty OK food, but service was great. Had a braised beef slider and felt it was under seasoned.

I'm gonna rave about this restaurant, so get ready to read an essay.I love this cafe. I love it so much, I'm eating here right now. I try to get here at least once a week for lunch because it's my favorite spot in Gainesville. When I have guests come into town, I bring them here. I have never left this restaurant without thoroughly enjoying my experience. I'm actually ashamed that I've waited this long to leave a glowing review, because they deserve it.So what's the big deal with New Deal? You want to know something? The best part is that it's not a new deal at all. There's nothing gimmicky about this joint. It's a classic cafe to grab casual American fare; it's just executed extremely well. Every time I come here, the service is wonderful from the extremely amicable staff, the food comes out within 5 minutes, and it is always fresh and cooked to order. Here's how my typical visit works. When I stop in by myself, I visit the walk-up counter in the main dining room, order my usual (the seared tuna club with fries and lemon-garlic aioli), and assume my spot at the end of the bar in the back. I do the daily NYT crossword for a few minutes, until the food comes out. That's when the magic happens. The first things I go for are the fries. Oh, the fries. Straight-from-the-fryer hot, crunchy as hell, salted to perfection, and piled high. Best fries in town if you're into that type of thing (this is very important to me lol). The seared tuna club is actually a creative take on a sandwich that I would otherwise never order. They give you a nice slab of sushi-grade tuna, seared on one side with the usual lettuce, tomato, and thick-sliced bacon on some beautiful toast (with more lemon-garlic aioli). I think this is my favorite sandwich out there right now.If you're not into the whole Tuna thing, they also make a delicious burger using locally-sourced beef, and they have really good vegetarian options. The salads are delicious, they always have a creative soup of the day, and you can get a flatbread if you're in the mood.Anyways, here's the moral of the story. New Deal Cafe is a great local lunch spot with walk-up and full-service options (same kitchen/menu) serving creative takes on simple fare executed perfectly and consistently. Please come support this place if you haven't been here yet: you won't be disappointed.
