This is one of my go-to sushi spots and the food is always well done. However, this particular time that I went, I had a weird experience with one of the male servers. Firstly, he didn’t say hello or welcome me when I walked in. I asked for an extra napkin, he said I already had one so I guess he didn’t get it. I had to remind him again that I wanted another napkin. Then, I would ask for eel sauce and he just stared at me instead of saying anything. He was going to serve food to somebody’s table, but he could’ve at least said something like “sure, just hold on a second.” Throughout my time there, it’s like he barely acknowledged my table. The place wasn’t busy so I had no idea why. Whenever I would ask him a question like “where do I sign?” (in relation to the check), he would answer in a condescending manner. As I walked out, he just stared at me and didn’t say anything.

Philip Sushi — A Hidden Gem with Big Flavor and Bigger Value
“Sometimes the best meals are the ones hiding in plain sight.”
We’ve driven past the older strip center on Phillips Highway more times than we can count, never guessing a standout sushi experience was tucked inside. Philip Sushi doesn’t announce itself with neon or fanfare. It simply opens the door and lets the food do the talking. Within moments of stepping in, we felt that familiar Culinary Duo spark, this was going to be a good night.
Ambiance & Décor
Philip Sushi won’t be mistaken for a glossy date-night destination, but it’s spotless, well-kept, and comfortable. The room reads “classic neighborhood spot”: tidy tables, a calm sushi bar, and the hum of regulars who clearly know their favorites. We wouldn’t pick it for a big anniversary, but we’d absolutely pick it for a relaxed, satisfying meal where the focus is on what’s on the plate.
Menu & Drinks
The menu is surprisingly extensive; one of the most varied we’ve seen locally, with creative specialty rolls that blend textures and flavors in playful, memorable ways. That breadth is a promise the kitchen keeps. We also appreciated the reasonable drink prices, making it easy to round out the meal without second-guessing.
Food Highlights
We always look for something distinctive to kick things off, and at Philip Sushi it was the fried basil appetizer; a crisp, aromatic surprise we’d order again in a heartbeat. On this visit (our second), we intentionally sampled a cross-section of signature rolls, and the throughline was obvious: quality fish and generous portions. If you’re used to skimpy fillings, you’ll be happily surprised. The rolls arrive well composed and photogenic, but never fussy. Each bite delivers clear flavors, clean, fresh fish; balanced sauces; crisp and tender elements in proportion.
We also loved how the kitchen keeps its eye on value without compromise. It’s not just that plates are full; it’s that the ingredients justify the size, flaky tempura where you want crunch, cool slices of fish where you want silk, and restrained sauces that support rather than smother. It’s a kitchen that trusts its fish and technique, and that confidence reads in the food.
Service
Service is straightforward and efficient. Don’t expect white-glove ceremony; do expect prompt seating, quick refills, and dishes arriving at a good pace. We enjoyed a friendly rhythm throughout the long waits, no rushed courses, and plenty of small check-ins to keep things on track.
Value (Pricing)
Compared to other sushi spots in the area, Philip Sushi is a clear value leader. With top-tier roll variety, portions that don’t skimp, and pricing that rewards curiosity, it’s easy to try something new without watching the bill climb. The presentation, colorful, tidy, appetizing, adds a touch of polish that belies the humble address.
Overall Experience
If we judged by exterior alone, we might have missed this place, and that would’ve been a mistake. Philip Sushi proves that great sushi doesn’t need a flashy backdrop. It needs fresh fish, a creative menu, and a team that gets the basics right. This is the kind of neighborhood keeper that slips into your weeknight rotation and still feels special on a casual date. We drove home talking about what we’ll order next time, which, for us, is the true sign we’ve found a winner.
The Culinary Duo Rating: ★★★★☆
You'd better leave this place alone. Look them up! Look for their health inspection for Philips Sushi. If you care about your health and children, stay far away from this place. They have so many health violations.

This place has the best everything. I’ve tried it all, from appetizers to sushi and hibachi. All the food has really good flavor. They have the best fried rice and soup hands down. The chicken hibachi is amazing and very flavorful. They also have the best sushi in my opinion. It’s not overpriced at all either. Also, I always get quick and friendly service.

This place is just amazing!!
Phillp Sushi is hands down one of the best (if not the best) sushi restaurants in Jacksonville. The two best rolls... "Out of Control" and "Godzilla Rolls" with soy paper are hard to beat!!
food poisoning was good in moment though.
Best clear soup !
Extremely underrated sushi that is better than most of the expensive high profile sushi restaurants in Jax. Would definitely recommend to others Gem of a place and find. Sushi tastes fresh and high quality, friendly staff.
