I honestly dread writing this review since our family has gone to this restaurant for over 30 years. So this review is based on our last experience there this past week.
I was in the area and decided to order takeout because we live in Saint Augustine. Among other things, I ordered four spicy tuna rolls. When I got home, the “spicy tuna rolls “ were not spicy tuna rolls, because we have always ordered them there. When I called the restaurant to inquire, I was told, by the new owner, this is how they are and he made no attempt to make it right.

It was great the food the cook was amazing the only thing I didn't like was they added an 18% gratuity on a party of 2. But everything else was amazing!!!! The coi ponds and waterfalls were Absolutely gorgeous!!!

Our food came out cold we sent it back and they put it into the microwave then sent it back out. We sent it back again and then they finally remade it. They only comped the single tea that my table had and when we went to complain the manager tried to blame it on our server who did the best she could. He tried to say that she was busy and left it in the window too long. That’s not what happened and anyone who works in the food industry can see that. The meat and veggies were cold while the rice was hot. Our plates sat under the warmer waiting for the rice while our stuff went cold. That’s not the servers fault. It’s the kitchens. It’s also the kitchens decision to put our food in the microwave to reheat it when we sent it back. Very very disappointing.

From Onion Volcanoes to Koi Ponds: Why Sakura is the Ultimate Date NightSo you want to celebrate your first date in style? Maybe it’s their birthday, maybe you’re ready to pop the question, or maybe you just want to show your partner they’re worth the world. Sakura Japanese Steak House on San Jose Blvd delivers it all with hibachi flames, bold sushi, and a koi garden so dreamy it feels like fairy-topia.
When the appetizers arrive, don’t be fooled—what looks like mozzarella sticks are actually calamari in disguise. Rolled, breaded, and fried golden, it’s a crunchy surprise that makes you laugh before you even take the first bite.
Then comes the sushi. Sakura doesn’t do subtle. Rolls arrive stacked, shredded, and garnished with flowers flashy, colorful, and unapologetically extra. They’re as Instagram-worthy as they are tasty.
Yhe real magic happens at the hibachi grill. Chefs flip shrimp across the table, clank spatulas like drumsticks, and light onion volcanoes that puff steam like a miniature Mount Fuji. It’s dinner with a side of “wow.”
Inside, the tables hum with energy sizzling rice, flying veggies, and plenty of laughs. Step outside after your meal and the vibe shifts. Fairy lights glow above koi ponds and waterfalls, creating a dreamlike setting that feels made for romance.
Sakura isn’t just dinner it’s a destination. Whether you’re celebrating your first date, your partner’s birthday, or even dropping to one knee, this is the kind of place that turns a meal into a milestone.
If they don’t say yes after this date night… it’s not the restaurant’s fault. 😉
Koi ponds, hibachi fire, and sushi drama Sakura has it all.

We had a wonderful time at Sakura's last night. The food was excellent, the portions were huge, the people at our hibachi table were great fun, just the perfect time we had, and the koi pond was beautiful.

The food was delicious. I just thought the hibachi chef was passive aggressive and a little rude. He asked all the twosomes around the table if they were couples but when he came to the same sex couple instead he said “friends?” - so imagine - couple? Couple? Couple? -pauses…friends? They replied “couple” He shook his head and began to cook. I thought it was very rude. I was infuriated but the couple had no reaction so I just sat through dinner which now had a negative vibe when it started out nice. We were started quickly but it took at least 25 minutes before a chef made it over. The food was good.
