I've lived in NE St Petersburg since the 80's, and have been a patron of the The Birchwood Canopy for many years (as the views from the rooftop bar are spectacular)... but no more. The last two times, the service was atrocious. Adding insult to injury (as the saying goes), the staff hit me with a new $5.99 "service fee", bringing the total bill close to $40 for just two drinks (not counting gratuity). I'm sure the place will continue to thrive off business from all the wealthy people moving into DTSP (from places such as Chicago, New York and California), along w/ the Millennial and Gen Zer crowd who don't mind spending so much of their money on food, drink and entertainment (:

DO NOT THROW ANY SURPRISE PARTIES HERE!! I'm serious. The wait staff ruined my whole day. I spent a long time planning for my friends marriage proposal at the Birchwood on the roof top (the Canopy) and the wait staff might as well had told my friend to her face that she was getting engaged that day. I went upstairs to ask if they could use my decorations I brought to decorate the cabana I rented and they immediately said yes and I gave them a $20 as a thank you for the help then went downstairs to finish brunch with the couple who were getting engaged and my husband. They then came down stairs to my table and said "are you Emily?" Like WHY would you EVER think that was a good idea when you are very aware we are planning a surprise and you KNOW I'm with the guest of honor??? I payed it off, whatever. Then we get upstairs (I told them the exact plan) and they start swarming us asking us questions like... COME ON!!! They proposed, she said yes...everything is fine now. The way it works is you pay for the cabana by the hour and you use the hourly rate toward your food and beverage bill plus 24% tip included in the overall bill. Ours only went $8 bucks over... You already know how I feel about the service. I told them I would leave cash for the remaining balance. WELL, They charged my card for the $8 and Kept the $20 I left as a tip!! As a girls girl and previous waitress myself, I would help someone out in a second not because its part of the job, but because why not?? I hope this helps someone because I am utterly baffled and disgusted by the oblivion of the wait staff at the Canopy Restaurant. PS the only good server there who was supposed to be the only one taking care of us name is Emily. TY Emily.
