This was on the top of my list of places on the big island to try malasadas so I had high hopes. In hindsight, I should've ordered the malasada with no filling. Instead, I got 1 mango and 1 passion fruit but to my disappointment, I found them much too sweet! I've had jam-filled donuts in several European countries which weren't overly sweet and which I loved, and I thought these would be similar. On the other hand, my partner had fish and chips which he really liked.
Many shops close at 16:00 in the city of Honokaa. The drive-in is open until 6 p.m., but the Malasada was out of stock during the 17:30 visit. Even at this hour, one local after another was using the drive-thru. I will try Malasada next time.
Best malasada I had while on island. Hot and fresh with a delicious mango filling. I wish we would have timed our visit for lunch- next time we will. 100% a must do on the east side.
