Amazing food and amazing service. This is a small hole-in-the-wall takeout-only restaurant serving up high quality dishes that do not disappoint. The mochiko chicken was phenomenal, the garlic ahi was super flavorful, and the tataki was great as well. Highly recommend.

Ethel's Grill is a popular hole-in-the-wall located in Kalihi, Honolulu. It's known for local and Japanese fusion dishes including the ahi tataki, barely seared, served in a sesame-shoyu sauce, the shoyu infused with garlic, mochiko chicken and deep-fried turkey tails.
The restaurant has a casual and unassuming atmosphere that only offers take away plate lunches.
You can find the daily changing menu specials that are highlighted on the Ethel's Grill Instagram page.
Chef Robert Urquidi and his wife, Minaka run the casual no-frills restaurant. The small size and bustling environment are common so, be prepared to experience a wait during peak hours. But the wait is worth it!
The prices are reasonable especially given the quality and portion sizes of the plates that include fresh salad, miso soup and rice.
Ethel's Grill is open for breakfast and lunch until 2 p.m. It’s tucked under an apartment building on lower Kalihi Street.

The food is good home cooking, large servings and tastes good. This is take out only and parking is almost non-existent so may have to park illegally for a few minutes while you pickup order. Also should order online or on phone, otherwise you have to come back later to pick up food. It takes ~45 minutes to prepare.
The food is good local cuisine, a worthy stop when in the area.

Read a review on here about the service Nobel no great but home girl was awesome. People might consider the area sketchy but it was fine. Most importantly the food was AWESOME and it was a lot! Price was really good for the amount too. It really is a hidden gem. I had the locomoco and recommend. Bonus as they speak some Japanese.

This place is a hidden ?
Everything here is delicious, portions are large and priced well they all include a seafood miso soup that is very tasty ?
Parking can be tricky, normally I find parking in the side of the building in the parking structure. The street is never busy also the order is brought out when it’s ready. This place only offers takeout, but sand island is just down the street and makes a perfect ocean front dine.

Such nice people, great food in generous portions and we got lucky today with a pop up bake sale. Everything was delectable and so scrumptious delicious ? I finished my Christmas shopping there. Just love this place!!! ? Their daily specials are must, especially the pork chops with stuffing and mushroom gravy. The regular menu is good too, I had the Japanese Hamburger steak- so ono! ?

This is take away only now. We just got a side portion of their famous tataki to try which has about 8 pieces over some veggies. It was yum and fresh but unsure about all the fuss over it. Good value though for $9.95 but wouldn’t go out of my way for this.

What I ordered wasn't good at all. I ordered the Mochico Chicken with no sauce and rice and some kind of Japanese noodle salad. I was disappointed because they're kinda expensive and it's a very old place. It seems like others like it because sometimes people are waiting but only a few seats inside. Or maybe I just picked the wrong item to eat.
