Bar Leather Apron 745 Fort St #127a, Honolulu Cocktail Bar • $$$

“I've been wanting to try this place for over a long time now and FINALLY got a chance a chance to go!! Luckily it was early on a Wednesday night and we were able to walk in without reservations. But with only two guys working they limited the seating. Located in the a tiny intimate space with a bar and some tables I heard that the best seats are at the bar with front row seats so you can see the bartenders do their thing. We were seated on a table where we couldn't see but it's ok because we were engaged in conversation all night. Love that we all got different things and got to try each other's drinks. Everything was crafted with excellent care and beautifully and articulately presented with a short narrative about each drink. The starred ones were my faves. Round 1: ***E ho'o pau mai tai-12 year rum, spices: orgeat, fig lime, absinthe, keawe wood smoke. My friend said this was the world's best mai tai. I always wonder how anyone can make that claim unless they have literally travelled the world and tasted every maitai. They might not be wrong though, because this award winning drink was one of the best maitais I've ever had!!! Not too sweet, much more complex than your typical beach drink, and full of wonderful flavors! Masterfully made! **Kisetsu Sour/ lilikoi - changes seasonally - Nikka Coffey gin, mason pepper, yuzu, bergamot, lilikoi, lemon, tonic . This drink changes with the "seasons". Beautiful, refreshing and too easy to drink! Espresso martini- haku vodka, pandan, cynar, sesame, cold brew, whole egg. They smoke the espresso beans in front of you. My friend liked his drink more than I did. Round 2: Red Shiso smash- (not on the menu)-Toki, red shiso, lemon, yuzu, wasabon sugar, soda. Good but not my favorite. ***El Umami- tequila, mezcal, bergamot, strawberry, tomato, bergamot- lovely in looks and taste! A little sweet, a little smoky. Roma Norte- mezcal, chile verde, grapefruit, honey, black pepper, frozen apple. Super cool presentation. Good if you like smoky. ***Smoked salmon- bourbon smoked salmon, wasabi, dill oil, smoked trout roe. Soooo good! Great for sharing. Excellent servers knew we'd need more bread. Complimentary: Rice ball snacks Dessert: Ganache with yuzu- a perfect ending! Service by the guy in the leather apron and hat (sorry didn't catch his name ) was top notch. We were very well attended to. Love that they fill chilled water without having to be asked through the evening. I can see why people love this place and why it's James Beard worthy! Drinks nowadays are pricey everywhere. Theirs come with creativity, care, craftsmanship and class which give them more value than those at most other bars.”

Fête

Fête 2 N Hotel St, Honolulu American • $$

“It was a nice surprise to have lunch here with family! We grabbed a strawberry yuzu soda, one of the specials, local beets salad, and the toast and Fete spreads to share. The soda was more so a juice consistency, topped with dried citrus for a zing and was both tasty and refreshing. We all loved the salad with fresh beets, arugula, and fried scallions. It was nice that it was a serving big enough for 3 people to share, too! As for our entrees, we tried a tuna salad sandwich, the lemon zucchini risotto, and fried chicken with a side of collard greens. Large portions! We didn't care for the tuna salad sandwich, it was a big sandwich with a hamburger bun and some bacon, but just was not what we wanted.. The lemon zucchini risotto on the other hand....it wowed us Fried chicken came with a spicy tomato jam that was yummy, and chicken was nice and tender. A little bit oily but otherwise nice crunchy skin. Decided to share a strawberry fennel sorbet for dessert walking back and it was very flavorful with equal blend of both. All in all we ended up very full and satisfied from our lunch here. Less than $120 for 3 people 3 meals 2 apps and drinks was not bad at all! We enjoyed almost everything we tried and liked the creativity of the menu as well as the fresh and organic ingredients used. Looking forward to trying more!”

McDonald's 2121 N Nimitz Hwy, Honolulu Fast Food • $

“Lunch for my niece in Honolulu, Hawaii...I saw that the annual Halloween buckets just arrived, so I went to the nearest McDonald's to get a Happy Meal. This location on Nimitz Highway is easy to spot. It has a drive-through and is two-stories tall. I entered the relatively clean restaurant, stood in the pleasantly air-conditioned environment, and ordered on the app.The Happy Meal comes with two small sides. I selected the sliced apples as the other side to the extra small French Fries. Even though the app makes the customer choose a beverage, an empty cup is given - so the customer fills the cup with whatever soft drink anyway. I didn't know what kind of sauce my niece wanted with her Chicken McNuggets - she said she was fine with anything. I also didn't know that she preferred Sprite. Oh, well... now I know!...and she let me keep the green Halloween bucket! LOL! Other locations will have the orange, white, or purple buckets - for trick-or-treating... or knick knacks! Have a safe and fun holiday season!”

It’s perfect for a casual date night to watch the chef cook right in front of you, or perfect for take out. “All right guys, let's be real! Yelp... you really did trick me. Long story short, we were actually supposed to go to a different pho location, however, they were having renovations. I ended up stumbling on this location through using yelp, and, of course, filtering it down to ratings and this one popped up at 5 stars. When we got to the location, we noticed that it was really really busy. However, a customer flagged us down because she was done with her table and told us to take her table. The menu is simple and of course I didn't understand it but I knew that I wanted to eat something and try new things considering we've been eating at the same pho location way to often. We ended up ordering beef stew, bao bun, pho, and wonton. As we sat to wait for our food, we had noticed that there were so many people coming in to pick up food as well as having formed a line out the door. We got our food and realized that it was strictly VEGAN!!! I mean, don't get me wrong, it's not like I won't try it however, this girl was talking so much about how she can't wait to eat steak and eat a fat bahn mi! But OK I'm the real my most favorite item here was the bao. With the slightly sweet bun and all that flavor from the veggies it was really good. The beef stew was very flavorful but with a tinge of lemongrass flavor that I was not keen about. The wonton wasn't that bad. It actually had taro, peas, corn and carrots. The dipping sauce was more like a mild salsa. The pho was pretty tasty with a little kick of pepper. The "vegan meat" in there was to noticeable with not being meat so that was hard to swallow. Would we come here again? Yes I would without my husband and with my vegan friends LOL. It's the flavor of everything that made me enjoy it. Oh and the friendly aunties was really nice.”

“A bit hard to find but worth it! It’s a stall inside Duke’s, an open air marketplace. Stall #1 I believe. If you get lost, ask any vendor about the shaved ice stall and they’ll knowWe got two: one #4 (Kiki Island) and a #5 (Matcha Mori). Kiki Island comes with strawberry, mango, pina coladas syrups and ice cream (in the center), condensed milk on top, mochi & nata de coco on the sides, Li Hing powder sprinkled on top. I subbed out strawberry to try the lilikoi syrup for no charge! My partner loved all the flavors. Pina colada was his favorite. Our Asian parents enjoyed the Matcha Mori—matcha syrup with condensed milk, mochi, adzuki bean paste, and ice cream in the center. Both are $10 each”

“My Vietnamese friend suggested that we order the Super Pho Seven Courses of Beef at her favorite Vietnamese restaurant. It had a good variety of beef prepared in different ways. My favorite was the Lemon Beef Salad that we rolled up into rice paper and dipped into a delicious sauce. This restaurant not only has the best tasting food, they have the largest menu with over 100 authentic dishes. On Tuesday I ate at Broken Rice and last night I ate at Hale Vietnam, so that's 3 different Vietnamese restaurants in 3 days in a 2 block radius. This one is the only one that I ***** Highly Recommended!*****”

I made a reservation just in case the whole found out :) We had an appetizer Shrimp Gyoza, the Beet Salad and the Lucky Bowl with 2 drinks. All said, we were not disappointed at all and really missed Lucky Belly's lunches. The big difference between the Lunch and Dinner menu is the Lunch menu is reduced in the number of offerings. Otherwise, everything is the same.”

The wine pairings were spot on, absolutely perfect with our chosen courses. The space has such a lovely vibe - clean and modern, but comfortable and well appointed.
