“This place is a hidden gem on lower Lewers Street. A pain to get to, no easy parking, and is up two flights of outside stairs. BUT THE FOOD is great, the atmosphere is fun, and the view from the balconey offers all of lower Lewers personalities you could watch!

“Make sure you triple check your oder. Today we ate at the Honolulu Bistro for the first time. The guy at the register claims he didn't rung us up for 2 sandwiches. At checking out he did say back our order. The recipe is not detailed either. The amount we paid was definitely for 2 sandwiches. We ended up sharing 1 sandwich and left.“

The macadamia nut crusted mahi and the taro hummus were amazing and we loved the refreshing the coconut lime sorbet for dessert. Can't wait to go back and try more!“

“Helena's Hawaiian Food offers a delicious assortment of well-prepared authentic Hawaiian flavors. While I enjoyed the Kalua Pig and the short ribs very much, I wasn't a big fan of the Poi, though that might just be personal preference.

However, the portions were surprisingly small, especially considering that the prices weren't especially low. While the food was tasty, I didn't feel that the value was there. For example, a small plate of short ribs ran ~$30! And the Lomi Lomi felt more like salmon-flavored pico de gallo than actual salmon pieces.

The service was incredibly quick (i.e. food came out within a minute of ordering), which, in hindsight, makes sense since it's all probably pre-made.

The restaurant also is quite small. When you walk in, you definitely get the hole-in-the-wall ambiance. The parking lot, however, can fit maybe ~5 cars, while the restaurant can seat maybe ~10 parties. So plan accordingly.

If you're looking for an authentic Hawaiian experience and don't mind paying a premium, Helena's is worth a try. But if you're on a budget or prefer larger portions, you might want to explore other options.“

“My first time here after seeing them on tv. So glad the worker tied the bag of my 3 plates tightly and that they use strong plastic containers. I took a sharp turn and my bag flipped to the side. My food shifted a little in the container, but at least it didn’t spill out or leak out of the containers. Love the hamburger steak with crispy onions! Omg, the special parmesan chicken was huge!! This was ono too. Will definitely go back there again. ❤️“

“I arrived at Oahu, really hungry. When I went to rent a vehicle that was right next door to this place. They were closing but they told me that I could still order which was really nice ? I must say their food was really good. The place isn't really nice but their food was so ONO. ? if u ever on Oahu and ur hungry, this place is a must for me to go to when I'm hungry. Prices are pretty good for the amount of food they give. I could have shared my plate ? but nope. I saved it for my dinner ? instead. This place is for to go orders. So order ur food and go..... Oh, and for the two local men that were working there when I ordered my food. I want to say THANK YOU ? U both were very nice even though I got there when u guys were just about ready to close up. “Bob's BBQ has character, a small shop with good food. My brother-in-law was craving meat and they have it. Great pork ribs, beef ribs and chicken. Comes with rice and mac salad. We also had burgers. Crispy bacon made it perfect. The fries were piping hot. Service was nice and efficient. Other customers ordered fish, if we have time before we leave, we csn do another stop.“

“Penny's has been a family favorite for decades. We are addicted to the roast turkey plate (get the onions!).

When my wife was recovering in the hospital after our first born, her meal request was a Penny's roast turkey plate.

We stop in whenever we can.

No better low-key, family run grinds on the island!

Kid-friendliness: The staff is so sweet. Our last visit, they gave our kids little fun bags with crayons, coloring pages, etc.

“Honestly: I’m disappointed in *myself* for not finding this place sooner! Got the loco moco plate and let me just say- it’s not only packed full of food, but it’s also packed full of FLAVOR! The mac salad was absolutely on point as well. The young lady that assisted me at the counter, Taney, was an absolute delight, and shared her insight on the best “go-to” items on the menu with an added twist. :) I’m already excited for what I’ll try next!“

Service is outstanding: extremely fast from order to ready-to-eat.

Double cheeseburger deluxe (smash) and mixed plate are yummy. Fries (crinkle) are surprisingly good and generous. Soft drinks are fairly priced. However, I’d avoid any of the fried foods, saimin, and beef curry (pick beef stew instead).

The area gets somewhat sketchy after dark, so be aware of your surroundings.“

“This place is absolutely AMAZING! I stayed at the hotel and came here every day of my stay. Dinner one night, just a drink the next afternoon, and then brunch the following and final day. Every experience was wonderful from the staff to the vibe and the views it was a wonderful time every time. 100% would recommend!“

“They had a lot of things to add to my tofu poke bowl. The sauces were clearly marked and there were several options, and I loved being able to add wasabi, dressings, brown rice, crunchy onions and garlic, edamame, corn, onions, and more. It was a meal that I felt good about ordering and eating.“

“We got our food off of DoorDash, I’m a local and I am very picky with my Hawaiian style food. 10/10 with the laulau it’s not just pork it is real laulau with fish in it not too much kalo leaf I love the stem and they had that. Hot and ready to eat! My husband got the loco moco, now it’s his place to go next time we visit. He said it was the best loco moco he had in his life! My son is not a pork eater but loved the Kalua pork and rice. I’m picky with my chicken long rice I would say 8/10 cause it needs more ginger and green onion but it was still soooo good! We got kanak attacks after eating it. The poi just want to add in here is a bit too runny for me but still good. 👍🏻 and the last part the lomi salmon that one was a bit too salty but still 10/10 ! This is true local food and I will be back to try the other plates!!!“

“Our numerous visitations/food orders from here are hardly disappointing. Food is prepped well with great menu options, poke is fresh & tasty, service is fairly quick and always friendly. We usually order the Saigon Crunch, pasteles or smoked Kalbi plate with extra large shrimps. They do not skimp on their portion size and their tuna-mac salad is excellent! Inside dining may be a tad noisy so we take out, find a table next to the water and ENJOY!“

“I like local restaurants and L&L is good with reasonable price. Chicken Cutlets is a little bit oily but Loco Moco is very good. Don’t expect super clean tables and chairs.The loco moco here is cheap, the amount is so large that you can't finish it (regular), and it's delicious. During lunch time (starting around 11:30am), there are a lot of locals working in the area, so it gets crowded, so the later hours are often empty.“

“If you're ever looking to grab lunch on campus, I recommend checking out L&L at Paradise Palms. The food was mostly what I expected in terms of standard plate lunch, but the mac salad was especially great. The workers were also very friendly!“
