The Local General Store Bakery • $
3458 Waialae Ave, Honolulu

“A butcher shop & a bakery that are physically together in one business? Yes, who would have thought this combination would be a popular & successful joint venture of 2 owners having the passion in what they do! Enter The Local General Store (LGS), that replaced the former Kaimuki Superette (KS) in Kaimuki. Co-owner Jason Chow grew up in Kaimuki & attended the University of HI at Manoa w/ a biology degree. He then realized his passion for the local farmers/ranchers in support of the local food system while distributing sustainable fish to restaurants, then was exposed to animal butchery at Mud Hen Water Restaurant (MHW). He moved to Berkeley, CA to work at The Local Butcher Shop where he learned how to break down whole beef, pork, lamb & chicken; & fabricate/use the whole animal by turning unwanted cuts into sausages, smoked meat, pates, terrines & stocks. He also worked at Butcher & Larder in Chicago. Jason was one of 12 people recognized under the Eater Young Guns Class of 2019 for up & coming young talent & outstanding leadership skills. Co-owner/wife Harley Chow grew up in Waipahu & attended the University of SFO w/ a biology degree. While she initially intended to go into the medical field, her passion was baking. She worked at Jane the Bakery in SFO & learned how to make croissants & was part of the winning team for Best Croissants in SFO in 2018. In July 2018, she was accepted into the James Beard Foundation Women in Culinary Leadership Program & mentored w/ Pastry Chef Meg Galus in Chicago for a year, where she learned refined pastry techniques in women-led leadership skills. Both worked at the now-closed Hawaiian restaurant, Aina, in SFO, where they met & got married. Both moved back to Oahu in 2019 & jointly had pop-up events at the KS & farmers' markets during Covid. They then opened their brick-and-mortar shop consisting of a whole animal butcher shop & bakery called LGS in May 2023. The butchery focused & sourced local, ethnically raised meat to reduce Hawaii's reliance on imported meats, & the bakery focused on croissants & laminated doughs (folded layers of butter and flour), while sourcing locally grown fruits/veggies. Both areas were to bring awareness & increased accessibility to the local food system in HI. The butchery offers raw & cooked cuts of the entire animal, as there is no waste. Housemade meats include: beef (chuck roast, cross rib, pot roast, steaks, brisket, osso buco, stew meat, short ribs, roast beef, ground, salami, corned beef, burgers, tongue); lamb (Molokai venison, ground, shoulder roast/chops, shank, riblets, sirloin, leg medallions); pork (Boston butt, spare ribs, spam, jowls, chops, ground, Portuguese/Italian sausages, chorizo, smoked ham, ham hocks); etc. Other housemade items: beef/lamb tallow, lard, soup stock, beef/bacon chili, beef jerky, salsa, Bratwurst. The pastry shop offers both sweet & savory artisanal desserts that are too numerous to mention, which are offered on a rotational basis. Some of their pastries include: bear claw, kau orange marmalade & hazelnut braid, twice baked choc w/house azuki paste, guava/cream cheese danish, brown butter mochi w/ strawberry guava jam danish, mountain apple on vanilla custard, ginger & olena cookie, choc ganache croissant, bibimbap danish, smoked eggplant/goat cheese danish. Other items include: cookies, puddings, cakes, quiches. Excellent sandwiches of the day (breakfast from 8a & lunch from 11a), using meats from the butchery & housemade bread from the bakery. We had the following: * Lilikoi danish. This unique lilikoi curd & baklava croissant danish was nicely balanced, slightly tart & not overly sweet. Loved the flaky layers of buttery croissant! * Char siu danish w/ pickled mustard greens & sesame seeds. Enjoyed this savory, unique croissant made for Chinese New Year! Who would have thought to use char siu & pickled greens to create this delicious creative pastry?! * Salami sandwich. With housemade “

“WOW, WOW, WOW, this was awesome. I actually enjoyed this better than the old school spots in Japan (I grew up there) as the flavours were so unique, the mochi so light, and not remotely too sweet. It's totally worth the cab ride from Waikiki. The products have a short shelf life as they're not full of preservatives, but I guess that's why they're so delicious and magical. Even my hubby, who is generally not a fan of this type of sweets was raving about it. We had the jumbo strawberry (better than anything I've had in Japan), the mixed berry (wowza), the chocolate matcha mochi cake (not too sweet, fluffier and lighter than other mochi cakes), and the yuzu flavour (delicious). We were in the neighborhood for an early dinner seating elsewhere and dropped by around 4pm, not realizing that they closed at 3pm! But they ran out and welcomed us in and graciously gave us some samples and even gave us an ice pack for our purchases. Honestly, they've kinda ruined wagashi for me because I can't imagine anybody beating this, lol.“

“Yipppeee, we were lucky enough to be in town for the Kaka'ako Farmers Market in Honolulu held on Saturdays. There is just too much food available in Oahu and we had been buying lots of snacks. We saw the Wallflour booth and everything looked so delicious. My wife and I planned to buy one pastry to share. Everything looked so good that we ended up buying 3 pastries. We tried a cinnamon roll, a banana hazelnut croissant and a pear osmanthus brioche tart. All three were delicious, light, fresh ingredients and loved the fruits. The cinnamon roll was the right chewiness, nice frosting and cinnamon seasoning. The hazelnut banana filling was actually evenly distributed inside the croissant and each bite was tasty. The pear osmanthus brioche tart was soft, excellent balance of sweetness and taste of fresh fruit all combined in a great pastry. On our next trip, we plan to try more and different pastries. Now that we are familiar with Walflour we can be strategic in how many and where we buy treats to eat.Save your dessert appetite and get multiple pastries on Saturday mornings.“

I finally went back to the counter after 10 minutes and asked for the cookie. The shop got busy so most likely they forgot about the cookie. “Beautiful and delicious cake, amazing service!! I recommend you plan your own cake needs well in advance...but I found myself scrambling to put together a celebration for our parents' anniversary (We had to wait to settle everyone's schedules for this party). I'd reached out to a few vendors and only 3 were available on such short notice. I'd considered another bakery nearby, but I went with A Cake Life because Kristin was so prompt and professional in her emails and she was honest about what they could do for us with a few days' notice. I loved that she kept her focus positive...basically they could make our cake but they weren't able to deliver it so we picked it up the morning of our event. We went with a 6" and 10" semi-naked cake decorated similarly to their Rustic Green pre-designed style. It was perfect! I asked Kristin what the two most popular flavors were and she said Strawberries and Cream and Lilikoi, so we went with those for our 2 layers. The cake was a hit and we got so many complements. We ordered a little more than we needed because I liked the look of a bigger cake. Our guests were thrilled to take home leftover cake and they even spatula'ed the crumbs and filling into their to-go boxes, all we had left were the cake board and topper, lol!!! Mahalo Kristen and Crew...keep up the fantastic work!!!“

We waited in line and iso wanting to serve an elderly he wanted to help the young gal behind us so i mentioned to him we have been waiting in line. From that point on, he did not even want to make eye contact with us and he was rude to us. “I don't know if the chef is Indian or not, but their savory dahi toast is a great twist on the original version. Dahi tadka in the middle topped with crispy been leaves. Amber at the window has great interpersonal skills. I wish this place existed in Seattle where I came from.“

“Great pies! Love the filling to crust ratio on the mini pies. They have a lot of good tasting fillings too! Love the Hawaiian pear and banana cream so far :) Parking and getting there are a hassle. Small lot, construction in that Kapalama area. Wait time not too bad. And the staff is friendly, local place so hard to get to picky with the limitations. Hope they do well and move to a bigger place and make more pies per day!“

“Located on Sand Island Access Road; open only on Thursdays & Fridays. This is a good place if you want to customize your order - putting different cookies in one box, or if you have a large order. I recommend you call them in advance & set up a pick up. They have about 4 or 5 parking stalls in front of their store. Just be careful when you back out to leave, as you do get huge trucks barreling down the road pretty often.“

We Heart Cake Company Bakery • $$

“The owner is the sweetest and kindest person. I messed up the date on a custom birthday cake order (was actually placed by me for a day later than I needed it). She went over and beyond to accommodate the order anyway so that I could have it in time for the birthday celebration, and I didn't even ask her - she offered it, despite having a full schedule with deliveries on existing orders. The cake was of course amazing and beautiful like all of their creations. I can't say enough great things about this place and the owner. Definitely coming back again!!“

“I don't eat as much bread as I used to but was in the area so walked in to see what they had. Bought a loaf of pumpkin chocolate chip bread and a round of cinnamon chip bread. The cinnamon chip bread was okay but too big and ended up giving away part of it. But I loved the pumpkin chocolate chip bread so much I've gone back several times. It's really delicious! They have a schedule of when they make certain breads but I've been lucky enough to hit it when they have this bread in stock. I've been to Great Harvest bakeries on the mainland, especially in Minneapolis and they carry different breads. I liked a sunflower seed bread and some giant chocolate chip cookies, but I've not seen them here at this bakery. But as long as they keep baking the pumpkin chocolate bread, I'm good.“

“I really like this store. I have a 5 star ⭐️ rating because I really love it. The only thing is I called at 1pm they said their Cinnamon rolls were done I had to go back and forth 3 times just to get them. Cause they never make it yet. Workers kept saying 30 minutes I waited more than 1.5 hr. But over all is good. I think the owner wasn’t there. I know if she was there it’ll be all good. Yeeey from 1pm to 4:55 it’s finally done.“

“The perfect cupcakes for any celebration- or just a sweet little treat! We got some cupcakes to celebrate my husband's birthday and they were so delicious! The cupcakes were cute and dainty in their decoration. Each cupcake was distinctly flavored to perfection. We dug into the ube, red velvet, guava, chocolate vanilla and salted caramel. All outstanding! They sell candles if you're celebrating so no need to make a separate trip to the store!“
