Incredible tasting menu, everything was so delicious. The service was so personable and the chef came out several times to describe what we were about to eat. Sake was very good too!
This was an intimate, elegant, and comfortable, homey experience. The food was stellar, and they catered to two vegetarians alongside regular menu patrons. Everything was delicious. It felt like a Japanese restaurant in Japan with the addition of the server's home-town stories. We also really liked both the Kona sake and their distillery nigori sake. Would definitely recommend. We'll be back!
Sake was delicious. Food delicious presentation beautiful. On the expensive side. Worth every penny
Very skillfully and authentic Japanese cuisine prepared by a very dedicated and hardworking chef. Locally crafted Sake tasting was a treat! We highly recommend giving Engawa a visit!!
This is an event dinner. It is a bit pricey however the food and the experience Is outstanding. A good learning experience on sake and Japanese food. Service was wonderful .
A lovely authentic Japanese dining experience. The service, atmosphere, and food were all excellent as was the sake pairing.
For anyone who is familiar with Japanese cuisine you will be disappointed. The first course of tomato was good, but lacked complexity and needed salt. The Sake pairing was far too sweet and fruity to pair well. Tofu salad was the best course of the night though the tofu was flown in from Honolulu. The Sake Kasu shoyu dressing was delicious. The Sashimi course was very good but you could get this at any good Izakaya in Japan for a fraction of the cost. The "special sauce" you were to use on the salmon was I think Kewpie sesame dressing out of the bottle. Nothing special. The foil baked fish was good, but could have had a better presentation and not just delivered in a nice dish in the foil. I have had really excellent unagi in Japan and this was not even close. It was luke warm, tasted as though it had been shrink wrapped from China and heated in a micro wave oven. In fact, all the dishes could have been done on a hot plate and microwave. I'm not sure they had a kitchen. The unagi don had egg under and wasabi on top. Both very strange. A typical unagi don would be grilled over sumi ( Japanese charcoal) and sprinkled with sansho a Japanese seasoning. All in all a disappointing evening. If going to the Hapuna resort try Meridia restaurant, or Manta on the otherside at the Mauna Kea. Still searching for a great Japanese Omakase or Kaiseki in Kohala!
Our party of 4 thoroughly enjoyed the premium sake tasting dinner last night. It was wonderful talking to the owners of brewery and tasted the fresh clean local ingredients full of health benefits with the delicious house brewed sake. We loved it so much we even ordered some to be shipped back home to N California. Highly recommend the experience if you are in the area. The setting was incredible as well.
We had an amazing experience! Tama was so knowledgeable it was great to listen to him talk about their sake. Each course was delicious and the presentations were beautiful! We had the premium experience and it was so worth it!
Excellent meal in a quiet and intimate setting. Highly recommend. Go with the sake pairing to enhance your meal and learn about the great quality sake brewed in house.

We have recently been in Japan for close to 3 weeks. We ate amazing meals while we were there. Engawa offered us a wonderful omakase experience that rivals anything we had in Japan. The ingredients that went into each of the evening's courses were exceptional resulting in a memorable dining experience. We also had the sake pairing to accompany our meal in addition to the one glass of sake that comes with it.. The sake was very good and we enjoyed the unique flavors of each one we tasted. The service was extremely attentive and appreciated the explanation and description of each course and sake. Highly recommend.
My wife and I came here for a Tuesday dinner from the Mauna Lani. This was the best meal we've had on the island hands down. Great food, sake and service. Come here, you will not regret it if you enjoy Japanese cuisine!
Authentic Japanese cuisine. Each dish and glass of sake is a work of art! Service was excellent and he provided an explanation of the sake process. Highly recommend
Even better experience than we had hoped. We did the sake pairing and enjoyed learning more about sake as well as the superb food. We appreciated the attention to detail including sourcing. Everything was outstanding.
Tama-San and Dr. Takahashi have absolutely nailed their concept. Everything was flawless. If I could rate this restaurant higher than the max I would. A must try if you are on the big island!
