This is the place where the locals go so you know this place is great! If you go during prime time it will be busy. The trick would be to get seated right before then.

Just great food….thats what Maguro-ya is. The tamago was fluffy like a pillow and probably the best we’ve had and we have eaten a lot of tamago. The chef special nigiri for $45 and 12 pieces was delicious. Every piece was flavourful and nothing had a fishy taste, including the mackerel. The tempura was meaty and crunchy, yet didn’t feel heavy. Left feeling very satisfied!

10/10!! Amazing sushi spot off the beaten path but well situated no matter where you are coming from. The place was busy but the staff made sure we were sat quickly (without a reservation) and talked us through the menu which had an option for everyone. The nigiri was some of the best I’ve ever had. Will shift plans to come back tomorrow!

Amazing service. Incredible food. Busy for a reason. My new favorite sushi/ authentic Japanese restaurant. I never get chawanmushi anywhere, but maguroya does it right! I feel like I'm in Japan when I eat here.

The service was ok, the servers are nice.I was there around 7 pm and I ordered the Big Sushi Plate...it turned out 1-2 pieces were not fresh, so, around 2 am, I got a little bit sick.

I've been eating at Maguro-Ya for years. I have never been disappointed yet with anything that I have ordered. This time, I ordered the Chirashi Sushi. The fish was fresh and I like this dish because it comes with a variety of fresh fish over a bed of rice. The service is always prompt and friendly.

Maguro-Ya.More like Maguro-Ya gotta wait for 45 minutes for everything you order! But at least the person who we first ordered with tells us in advance, so we're not twiddling our thumbs waiting for our order. This place is located in Kaimuki near 11th Ave, next to Happy Day. There's metered parking out front, and a paid parking lot in the back. The inside is your typical Japanese restaurant with the sushi bar, wall lined with pictures and writings, short back chairs, and etc. We sat at the bar, which was the only seats available. It was fine until a large party showed up next to us that was inconsiderate and oblivious of others around them--usual talking loudly and obnoxious, add in incessant coughing, and chose not to move over when there's clearly space on the opposite side. Gladly, we were able to move to an open table. Even still slightly tight, it was way better than the bar.Starting our order at the bar. . .Chawanmushi. 45 minute wait.Yakitori. Also, 45 minutes.Dashimaki Tamago. 45 minutes. At this point, I was beginning to give up and thought about just leaving since everything is a 45 minute wait, but since we're already here...The Misoyaki Butterfish (came out first) was very good. Tender and flavorful meat with a nice crispy skin. The Maguro Poke was surprisingly very good. Soft tender ahi that was very prepared and dressed. Tasty and flavorful, and the accompanying pickled onions, sea asparagus, and pine nuts went very well together.Edamame! Forty-five min.... Not 45 minutes, but still took unusually long (after our butterfish and poke came out) Nothing to say about this. Just boiled soybean with a little salt.We added on a Negitoro Shiso Age after we moved to the table. This qualified for the 45-minute wait, but was never informed...Meanwhile, our Unagi Hako Sushi arrived. Upon first look, I don't see this was prepared correctly as it was quite messy. The rice was not compressed, there was no shape, and all the pieces fell apart when picked up with chopsticks. It's like as if the sushi was mistakenly rolled, and then tried to reshape it to flat sides. The rice was under seasoned as well. This was OK. Probably better off just ordering the Unagi Don for $10 more. The Shiso Age was excellent. Battered and fried very well. The minced fatty tuna filling was tasty, and went well with the herbaceous shiso. The curry powder put it over the top! Overall, I enjoyed the food at Maguro-Ya. Except the Unagi Hako Sushi, everything else was well prepared and well seasoned. Service was excellent. Since I now have an idea about the wait time for certain items, I'll be more prepared next time when I try more items!

Been going to Maguro-Ya for years. I moved away for some time, came back and was really excited to have my favorites again. To my dismay, I found that the standards have slipped drastically. My go-to was always the yosei nabe. It used to come full to the brim with a crab claw, couple of shell on shrimps, clams, mussels, and plenty of veggies and tofu. The last couple of time I went back to get it (had to give it a second chance because I thought it was a fluke), I was so disappointed to find 1 sad looking peeled shrimp, maybe 4-5 clams, two mussels, and not much veg for $33. The other dishes were not much better and I didn't think the sashimi was all that fresh. To be fair, some of the dishes that use cheaper ingredients are still pretty decent in size like the katsus and cheaper cut fish. I understand the whole inflation thing and the pain to keep operations going, but I'm sad to see quality and quantity go so far south for this former favorite hang out.
