I've driven by this place hundreds of times, and due to its location did not appear to be a place I wanted to visit. Went this past weekend and while it is an older bar, it was laid back and we had a good time. Cash-only bar.
The term "dive bar" has been defined as "A well-worn, unglamorous bar, often serving a cheap, simple selection of drinks to a regular clientele." The Tip Top fits that definition, as it is a place that has been in business since sometime near 1950, attracts a regular clientele, keeps its beer and food menu simple, and is nothing fancy in terms of architecture or ambiance. Went to TipTop for the first time for Halloween & had an absolute blast! The staff was so friendly, and the vibe is very different than anything else in Ames. As a 26 year old going to a drive bar I felt very welcome and would recommend Tip Top over any bar. PS the bartender Casey makes the BEST Bloody Mary’s!!
