I’ve spent some of my best nights Cypress, a staple of downtown cf and my favorite bar. Over the last 9 years since I’ve quit drinking I’ve asked for mocktails/ virgin drinks and gotten countless weird/ confused looks from bartenders at other local establishments and usually end up with a Shirley temple (no hate to Shirley, but sometimes a gal needs variety!) When I told the girls Saturday night to make me anything I was sooooo stunned and happy to get a virgin MULE! Fancy cup and all!! Those gorgeous young ladies made my night! I stayed til bar close like I was in my 20’s again. I was a life long customer for the nostalgia alone but I’m even more in love with the place than I was when I was drinking.

Was once the cool little bar in the Black Hawk Hotel but closed when the Hotel went the boutique direction back in early to mid 2000s. Owner moved the Cypress to its current location while trying to maintain the original vibe. It’s a decent bar with the 3 pool tables occupying a space about the size of the bar area. It’s not a true ‘dive’ bar in that sense. They attempted to create that vibe and it didn’t happen naturally over time. Plus a true dive bar opens in the AM not 3,4 or 5 PM. I guess it’s like saying Applebee’s is a Supper Club. But its patrons do give the Cypress an atmosphere that has the feel of the Pump Haus’ younger sibling or maybe cousin. It’s the grade school for the future regulars of other downtown bars. It can get sloppy, obnoxious and sometimes stupid as they hone their drinking skills to graduate to the adult bars. It’s not hidden because it’s right there after you find it the first time. Just find their patio on State Street with high volume small talk and enter there. I do like the place as it’s full of young adults who are still figuring themselves out. They still have that twinkle in their eye letting all know that life hasn’t thrown that curve ball yet. It’s also full young clowns who think they’ve figured it out but mom still folds their clothes. From open to 9 or 10pm the Cypress is generally quiet or the adult hours. Wandering in after 10pm you’ll probably find a mishmash of college (community) parties going on at the same time. Go see for yourself and have a good time but be yourself and get home safe.

Mason did good, give him a 5 star review. It's 12:29 and he closed it down, it was slow. I google review bars open until 2am because I want 2am. Slightly disappointing, good service, drinks and people. Change hours maybe, close at midnight on weekdays?
