I do like the place, but it is not quite the same since Mary retired and the new owners took over. The 5 or 6 times the wife and I have been there since the ownership change I have not been able to get my usual Chocolate Covered Cherry Avalanche with chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla. Was never a problem when Mary ran the place. The first 2 times they were having computer issues and it did not print out the special instructions, so it was made with the usual vanilla ice cream instead of chocolate. The other times I am not sure what happened, but they were made with vanilla instead of chocolate. Tonight it happened again, when I went to order and asked for chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla, the lady taking orders quickly told me "it comes standard with chocolate" before I could even finish. Well guess what..... it was made with vanilla ice cream.... again.... I might give them another try in the future, but if I do go back and it happens one more time it will be the last time I go. When Mary owned and ran the place she never got it wrong except for the once or twice the chocolate side of the ice cream machine was broken, and she was able to tell me when I ordered that it was broken. I have also never had an issue getting their version of the Chocolate Covered Cherry Avalanche made with chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla at Parlor City (think they call them “The Freez” if I remember correctly). I am not sure what the problem is since the ownership change, if it is a cost thing... charge me more... I will pay it. I do wish Mary well in retirement, but miss her and actually being able to get a Chocolate Covered Cherry Avalanche with chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla.

Was there the day it opened (1970s). I grew up just around the corner on Regent Street. I worked at Elmcrest (1974-1976) and everynight as I walked home from work I stopped by for a chocolate shake. Three of my siblings worked there as well as an old girlfriend. Even knew the owner/creator Stewart Salter. After moving to Oklahoma and when visiting my parents on Regent St., I always made a point of stopping by - ensuring both my kids had the opportunityy to experience the Kool-Moo experience. Awesomeness! R.J. Hansel

The owner is super nice. Great ingredients in the Avalanche! They do it best here! Prices are better here as well than some of the other places in town. They will always have my business because of that alone!

Another great, locally-owned business unique to Cedar Rapids. A bit quieter than Parlor City since there’s no drive-thru option. The favorburst cones are unique — they’re a flavored, brightly colored twist cone that I’ve not seen anywhere else. And there are some unusual options for concrete mixers (called Avalanches) including monster cookie, Rice Krispies, and crunch berry. I didn’t try it, but the menu also includes a dairy-free ice cream option called a Dole Whip. This is a business that clearly is trying new things and puts the customer first. Highly recommend!

Cute place! I got the banana sundae expecting banana ice cream, but it was basically a hot fudge sundae with banana slices on top. Still good though!

It was very good brownie sundae. Large cone, Oreo blizzard. Very good and we will be back.

H E L L OI just love this privately owned place and its last two owners. It takes a special person to run something like this. Its pink facade and art make it a must-see and a good product that it sells. You will be surprised that you find yourself standing in front of that little microphone again with anticipation, saying, " H E L L O"

It breaks my heart to review my neighborhood ice cream parlor so poorly, but after multiple letdowns regarding posted hours I feel it’s fair. We live down the road and walk up regularly with our dog and baby and always make it a point to bring family members when they’re in town. Awesome… except the terribly unreliable hours and staffing. While today wasn’t the first time this has happened, actually the third this year, here’s a summary of our experience.1.) Leave home2.) Walk to Kool Moo3.) See large sign after onto Old Marion Road from 100+ feet away with posted hours (closing at 10p)4.) Approach window at ~9:07p5.) Be advised they’ve closed at 9p as people are still waiting to receive their orders at the window6.) Leave disappointedNote: The ice cream is 5 stars as long as you can get it.I do understand I’m complaining, but I believe it’s not hard to manage an ice cream parlor with nuance. There wasn’t a line, you can see people have walked up (social queues, note the dog and stroller), and being customer focused doesn’t take more than being situationally aware. Hoping for better luck in the future.
